Just curious how everyone else feels about the current length of gun season. I myself feel that it needs to be lengthened at to at least 5 weeks and 6 weekends. Currently it covers 3 weekends over a span of 2 weeks or 16 days. I know some have time to take off and others are retired but for us working slobs at least 8 of those days are taken by work and for some of us it's even more. For example this year opening weekend I had family obligations in one of our fine southern states from which we returned Tuesday. Wednesday was filled with prior work obligations, Thursday was Thanksgiving and it's always filled with family obligations, Friday I was able to hunt in the afternoon after working the morning, Saturday I was able to hunt and today I have so many things to do around the house here I may be able to go out a bit this afternoon if all goes well, Monday thru Friday of next week I have to work and next weekend I'm on call so I can' t go then. Basically, this year I am able to hunt 1 morning and 3 afternoons. It's a good thing I have a lifetime license otherwise it wouldn't even be worth buying a tag to hunt this year. I believe if the gun season was lengthened it would promote more sales of tags because undoubtedly there is people out there that would go if they had more time. Also there is the family stress that deer hunting brings, your wife wants you to do such and such but you only have such a small amount of time to deer hunt or you need to be somewhere for the holiday etc.. If gun season was longer it wouldn't be that big of a deal to do all these things and hunt and it would cut out on a lot of unnecessary family arguments and stress. Ideally, firearm season would include muzzle loaders and it would come in about the same time it does now and run to Jan 1. What's your thoughts?

I think they need to do away with the break between firearms and muzzy and late archery. That 1 week break never has made much sense to me.

No. indiana has the most liberal firearm season in the mid-west. 16 straight days of firearms, a very short break and another 16 straight days of MLR season. So there is 32 days of gun hunting. Show me another state that is more Liberal.

If funds allow, consider buying a muzzleloader. You can use it throughout firearms season and then all of ML season. Then you've essentially lengthened your gun season.

Sorry, but NO, it does not need to be lengthened.

That's my thought! And why do we have a OBR yet you must buy a BUCK tag for gun? Why not a DEER tag? The wallyworld, buy a tag the day before, then get out the gun, one or two weekend hunters (the majority of gun hunters in indiana) would shoot the first brown thing that comes along (doe?) and go home! Thus "allowing more bucks to mature". And taking it out of the rut would do so even more!
The way it is set up now is kinda like having a airbag on a motorcycle.....there's no logic to it but it sure sounds good.!!

I don't think they should allow Archery & Gun Season to run concurrently. I remember back when I started to Deer Hunt; the DNR would have Archery Season first then close it during Firearm season. They then re-opened archery season after the General Firearm season. I think it's too dangerous for Bow Hunters to roam around the woods looking for a wounded or Hit Deer, when there are Gun Hunters about. Most of the Bow Hunters, I've seen during Gun Season, don't even wear the required-by-law Orange Vests or Hats.

I don't think Bow Hunters are required to wear Orange at any time of the year.
Stick gun season in Late December, you would start seeing a lot more P&Y Bucks taken here if there were less morons running and gunning during the rut.

Leave it the way it is. They'll never move it that late dhp because they want to keep the harvest numbers where they are.

I say shorten it, I like Illinois set up 3 days on 5 days off 2 days on ect ect. Some guys gripe and say "If you like that so much hunt Ill." I say why not borrow a good idea from some one else and put it to good use here. JMO

It's fine the way it is, IMHO. We've had this debate several times before, it should be interesting this time.
DHP- bowhunters *are* required to wear orange during firearms season and I believe muzzy season too.

Archery Hunters are REQUIRED to wear Orange Vests during Firearm Season. Placing Gun Season in December is a dumb idea. Anyway we have Late M/L season in December.

If funds allow, consider buying a muzzleloader. You can use it throughout firearms season and then all of ML season. Then you've essentially lengthened your gun season. I've got a couple Encore 209x50's, one stainless rifle and a blue pistol setup but with today's high tech muzzle loaders it seems rather silly to split the seasons since a lot of hunters use their muzzle loaders during gun season anyway. Deer adapt to their environment. Just because we shorten the season or set our season up like Il. doesn't necessarily mean our bucks will get bigger. It might help some in the northern half of the state where it's flat and pretty wide open. The landscape of the southern half of the state lends itself to tighter racks. Sorry I guess I should have done a search and added to a old thread.
