Tennessee 3 Bucks Versus Indiana 1 Buck The pro- One Buck Restriction folks have pointed to a decline in the number and percentage of 1 ½ year old bucks taken just because of the One Buck Restriction rule in effect. My contention is that it has a lot more to do with a trend that had already started before the OBR that was towards being more selective hunters. There is no debate that we as hunters are becoming older, more experienced and are a lot more selective than we used to be. This is happening in EVERY whitetail state, not just Indiana. Here are two charts comparing Tennessee which has a three-buck limit and Indiana who has been operating under a One Buck Restriction for the last 4 seasons. Can anyone tell me why Tennessee is doing better than we are if the One Buck restriction is the god send of an age shift? Tennessee Deer Age Chart Indiana Deer Age Chart

I think that the 3 buck limit says it all. Having more buck sightings / hunting hour makes it much easier to pass on the younger fellas before filling your tag.

How many doe tags are issued compared to indiana? From two for each weapon to 3 a day depending on the part of the state.. Georgia has a similar age shift and they can kill 12 deer statewide with two being bucks. .

I just don't understand where/how they are age-ing these deer here in Indiana. I've turned in my buck each year and NO one has ever bothered to even come out and look at my deer, much less try to age them! I just don't see most of the bucks in Indiana being aged by someone at checkin!
Am I wrong here??

As near as I can tell all they really record is the sex . Just wait until we have telecheck , that'll really improve the data ... not .

P&Y entries from 2nd quarter, 2006: Indiana: 95 Tennessee: 4 Keep the one buck rule Poor indicator.. We are a talking about an age shift, which is what the pro-OBR guys said this was all about. Trophy potential for state to state will vary quite a bit according to genetics and habitat. .

P&Y entries from 2nd quarter, 2006: Indiana: 95 Tennessee: 4 Keep the one buck rule Kyle, not every person wants or even cares about having a P &Y entry. Some of us are happy just to see deer, and are thrilled with every buck, or doe we harvest. Regardless of the OBR or not, there have always been, and will always be trophy bucks around, you just have to apply yourself and hunt hard. How do you explain all of the trophies from the hundred of pre QDM years? To me, Quality Deer Management should mean the largest number of healthy deer the land can support!

im glad we have the obr here, around my neck of the woods we have so many weekend warriors and poachers and tresspassers that if there was a 3buck rule there wouldnt be any bucks left in a short period of time.

I don't think poachers and tresspassers pay any attention to any limit rules, do you? The "weekend warriors" are still killing the small bucks no matter..

I don't think poachers and tresspassers pay any attention to any limit rules, do you? You have that right! I like the OBR but I not sure it does much more than transfer some young buck kills from early bow season to later in the year. As far as caring for the age structure, I DO! I think most hunters would prefer their buck to be older and have larger antlers. That will only happen when he makes it through his second season. The bottom line with deer management is that it starts with each one of us deciding whether or not we are going to take the shot.

If you want big bucks stop shooting dinks , it's as simple as that and doesn't require a stupid restrictive law to accomplish .
