Finally in from my Arkansas job. Just finished mowing. Our 45th anniversary tomorrow, so I asked my wife if there’s anything special she wanted to do. She said she just planned to traipse around some “crazy stores” ie Goodwill. She was like, you might as well go hunt. Ok, then! Getting the last of my gear together to head out on the first hunt of the year.

Sitting on my one private piece for the first time this year. I have some dandies on camera out here. I know where they like to bed but because of the wind, I had to sit a stand about 200 yards from there. I’d be thrilled to even see one of them tonight or maybe shwack a doe. Wind is a bit squirrelly and it’s warm, but we’re doing it. Got in without spooking anything so that’s the first challenge accomplished.

Set up on an oak flat that’s close to a road in an area of the property I’ve never sat in before. Only choice with this wind and this early in the season. Seen 3 does/fawns and a young buck all on the other side of the creek so far. A little warm, but a beautiful evening!!

I had a little buck making a scrape right where I park when I pulled in. Then, about 100 yards later busted a deer on the edge of a Beanfield. Been sitting for a good half hour, squirrels, barking, and cutting all around me! I walked in slow and easy, but still dripping sweat! Truck showed 90° on the dash when I got out. For sure, it’s cooler with a slight breeze in the woods.

Small 8 made his way back by for a drink along with a fawn running around making laps!

Oh, that was so close! A doe and a fawn I thought would be coming out right by my camera and south end of the food plot, actually skirted to the north but I got a visual on them. I soft bleated and mama stopped but my eyes are just not good enough at 35 yards and about 5 minutes of light left. Sure felt good to be out again!

Didn’t see a single deer while on stand tonight. Still a gorgeous night to be in the woods.

Went out yesterday evening and got in a stand. Ranged my distances and noticed 2 deer behind us at 400 yards. Only been in the stand for 10 minutes. Noticed that they were 2 stags. So we decided to stalk into them to get a closer look and maybe make a shot. We got in on them at 180 yards when the cows decides to come into the field and they pushed them south into some heavy brush. We got behind a small tree to use for a rest and hoped they would come out thru the opening. After aboot 10 minutes they came thru. They were aboot 200 yards and gave me a nice broadside shot. Shot the first one and my spotter said go ahead a get the second one. He was aboot 150 yards now and broadside too. So dropped him too. One was a spiker and the other a small 6 point. Not the biggest of Red stags but good eating and the farmer was happy that there were 2 less in his pastures.

Buck down, Shot him Wednesday morning had good blood never could find him, even searched with a thermal drone still nothing. This afternoon, I see a bunch of turkey vultures circling about a half a mile north of where I was hunting. We took the drone up and found the deer out in the middle of the field. Pic and story later I hate to read this. I'm sorry it didn't turn out the greatest but, I'm glad you did at least find him and all the "What if's" are answered.

Congratulations, that looks like fun! Very fun. Will be trying for more hinds and stags. Those 2 we took to the larder to sell. One was 200lbs dressed and the other 180 dressed.
