My buddy sjot this deer. The bump is the exit. It was broadside 44 yards. The deer was nearly level to him, maybe slightly higher on the hill side. 3 blade fixed never shot broached so that didn't fail. The pic is about 150 yards from the shot site. He followed blood for 750 yards then lost it. Tried calling some dog guys but they are all booked up. He shot it at 930 am and we were back at 1pm. Did some big grids in weed field, followed the creek. Nothing. Only thing we can figure is he missed the near side lung. Blood had bubbles but if 1 lung maybe he survived

I hope he’s able to recover the deer.

That shot doesn’t look that bad if he bedded up .

If you find the deer with a thermal drone and its alive you can't finish killing it and you must back away from the area and you cannot attempt to pursue the deer until a reasonable separation time has occurred.Per DNR You can use handheld thermal devices also….but same rules apply.

If broadside something in gods power is keeping it alive.

Saw 1 deer tonight. A nice 8 pt. Never close enough for a shot. Watched him for 15-20 min right be for sunset. Didn't seem like he had any place he was suposto be or go, he just meandered around behind my tree.

Had a run in with a would be shooter. Chasing a doe. Lost her by me. I grunted and brought him right in only to find out he broke half his tines 🤦🏻♂️. Will be back out in the morning.

My family and my brothers family are in north central Iowa for pheasants. We got here tonight and will be back home on Friday. Saw tons of deer on the drive out, including 3 mega giants in Iowa. Going to enjoy pheasant and Hungarian partridge hunting while we’re here, but I’ll definitely be ready to get back to deer hunting at the end of this week. Hunting private or public? I have been trying to get my group together to go to S.D. But they all are deer hunting. Lol Public land. North central iowa has a ridiculous amount of public land.

I’d try thermal drone guys . That shot doesn’t look that bad if he bedded up . Any recommendations? I will pass it along to him Looks like possibly 1 lung, and yes, deer can survive. Must have caught top of shoulder bone , or arrow deeflected, not allowing to pass through? Lost a buck several years ago in similar situation. Neighbor killed buck 4 weeks later in muzzzy season , and wound was healed over. My shot was slightly forward , and high, just missing lungs.

The hole in the pic is the exit wound. It was broadside but at 44 yards must have had enough arc to hit high enough on the impact side to slide over the top of that lung. I hope he or one of the neighbors finds it or kills it later this year.
