Hunted LBL this weekend was fortunate enough to find an agreeable gentleman to come to the call/decoy. Worked a bird at daylight but not knowing the lay of the land hurt me. After daylight I moved my setup as there was another field on the other side of a 50-60 yard strip that I could not see in the dark. The first bird talked alot but just wasn't interested. I just sat in that strip of small timber and called every so often. Another bird gobbled at the back end of the field so I waited......then heard some drumming and thought well, he's coming but nothing. Turns out, it was behind me and I caught him out of the corner of my eye crossing the strip of timber at an equipment crossing. Lost him for a bit then saw his head bobbing coming down the edge, rounded the corner and went right at the hen decoy. My son heard 5 birds but couldn't close the deal, not the most patient guy! My son in law heard nothing but had about a dozen hogs get within 20 yards of him. Now just need the same kind of luck here in a couple weeks. Very nice bird! We were down there last May for a long weekend, just a little family getaway. I saw hog sign on the Tennessee portion. I'd been hearing that they were getting more numerous down there.

I got out yesterday morning for one last scouting trip before season opens. I feel pretty confident in saying I can locate 8-10 different toms in just one area of the public land I'll be hunting. There was tons of strutting going on but not alot of gobbling. I have a game plan on the approach I'd like to take and I'm feeling pretty good about it. These birds will probably have other plans so I'm going to be as mobile as I possibly can. I'll only be carrying a small chest pack, my chair and my gun. I won't be lugging the decoys around this year. Final prep will be next weekend and I'll be off work for the first 3 weekdays and the weekend to open the season but it all hinges on the no show draw. I'm super excited and anxious for season to open up! Good luck on the no show draw…. That sounds interesting! I got in on the no show 3 days in a row last season and killed my bird on day 3. I'm hoping to have the same luck this time. I can't seem to get drawn for anything I sign up for but luckily for me People sign up for these hunts and don't show up for them. Last season the days I went at least half of the spots were open each day. One of the days 2/3 of the spots were open. I also have another piece of public that is open hunting if all else fails. It'll just be very difficult to find birds on this other piece although I do know they exist there.

Thanks guys.....
I was surprised at the low number of hunters I saw. Normally there are at least 1-2 cars at most of the pull-offs but other than 1 guy, didn't see another person which is not the norm.
Stayed at the Wranglers Camprgound in an 8 man cabin (there were 4 of us). My days of tent camping are over! Nice place and reasonable overnight rates. I was pretty happy not to have to get out yesterday as it was rainy, cold and windy. If I don't have a blind, I'm pretty much a fair weather guy now.

It may be a weird year with all this warm weather the farmers are already spraying, discing and planting fields here in the southern part of the state. I think the turkeys have been breading for many weeks as well. The woods will be really grown up and the fields that ahve not been sprayed are going to be pretty tall as well. I think our season should start a week or week and a half sooner. People complain every year the season needs to start early and every year we kill a ton of Birds with the season we have.I killed more turkeys the last week of Indiana season then any other time. It’s called hunting not shooting….🦃 with the mild winters we have had I predict this year to be as good as any. Here is a link to a YouTube video (2 years ago) with Georgia's turkey biologist and some really good information on their studies and reasoning why they set their season when they do and bag limits. I know its a long view but most of the info is in laymen terms so I could understand it - LOL. They also did a project on nesting success, etc. They talk about poults/hen ratios in the southeast being below 2 poults per hen and in some states below 1 (Arkansas). The second link is the most recent brood report I could find for IN (2021) and it showed a poult/hen ratio of 4-1 (July/August 2021). www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8xEHOKlBh0www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/files/wmr/fw-MR_2067_Wild_Turkey_Brood_Survey_2021.pdf

Got all our clothes sprayed down with permethrin today and they’re hanging on a line to dry. Also, finally got a turkey gobbling here in the area of the house. Took long enough, so I’m just sitting on the front deck listening to him hammer away.

I’ve got hens jakes and a couple nice toms I see almost every day they strut purring clucking blow up and yet they hardly ever gobble I never hear them in the morning on Saturday or Sunday every once in awhile I will hear one late day but it once or twice then they shut up

I was on a jake this morning, and couldn't get myself to pull the trigger even though we get two in Tennessee.

83* Thursday, rain Friday, 56* Saturday for youth season. What will the big temperature swing do to turkey activity?

My clothes got the tick treatment again this year as well. Too many nasty consequences these days. There's even an illness caused by ticks that can make a person allergic to red meat. That's not gonna work for me.

He’s back in his favorite spot. I moved my camera last weekend to the spot he likes to pitch down to. Hopefully he stays on schedule a week from now!!

It did not bother them one bit at my house last week we were high 70 maybe even 80 went right to snow rain sleet wind was nasty probably 35 to 40 for the high Friday Saturday and Sunday they were still out in the clover in my mulch all over the yard. Don’t know much about turkeys but I would of thought that would of shut them off right now but they didn’t seem to care

Seen a real Hoss earlier on way home from doc. He was strutting right off the road, and was built Ford tough. Lol. Heating up boys!

I've been checking out my permission piece from the roadway almost daily. I'm not sighting anything. Turkeys are still behind my house though. I just love my permission farm since it gives me the opportunity to run and gun, which is my favorite thing about turkey hunting. I don't have that opportunity behind my house.

I’ve got 3 Tom’s hanging out at my place pretty regularly. As a matter of fact one of em is like clockwork, 7:15ish every morning he’s stepping out in my field from the same place. Got a nephew who wants to kill his first bird. He’s 8 yrs old and 2 days ago I put a blind about 15 yds from where he pops out. It’s hidden pretty good and so far it hasn’t bothered the Tom. Forgot to mention pretty weird, one of my birds has the biggest body I’ve seen in a long time but has a dinky stringy maybe 4”-5” barely visible beard. He’s at least 1/3 bigger than the other Tom’s that hang around but they have long thick beards. On my binos it looks like his beard has been pulled off leaving a 2nd? Beard? What do you think? Youth season Saturday….woot woot.
