Saw some behind the house again. They're roosted on the field edge now. I got permission from the owner of the woodlot to tuck my blind into his woods so it's not in the field in the farmers way.

It may be a weird year with all this warm weather the farmers are already spraying, discing and planting fields here in the southern part of the state. I think the turkeys have been breading for many weeks as well. The woods will be really grown up and the fields that ahve not been sprayed are going to be pretty tall as well. I think our season should start a week or week and a half sooner.

People complain every year the season needs to start early and every year we kill a ton of Birds with the season we have.I killed more turkeys the last week of Indiana season then any other time. It’s called hunting not shooting….🦃 with the mild winters we have had I predict this year to be as good as any.

Woods are getting thick here. Glad I carved out my new clearing for my blind a while back.
Youngest daughter put a few rounds down range yesterday with her 20 guage, if they stand still for her they're in trouble.

Today While leaving the Wal-Mart in Valparaiso using the hardly used back entry the wife and I had to stop and watch 4 hens and 1 jake cross the road in front of us.

I put a ground blind up where I had been seeing the turkeys behind my house. By the time I walked back and made it to my back porch, there were already 2 toms and a hen walking towards it.

Gotta know our priorities! While playing in the Cardinal Ritter Golf Classic at Eagle Creek Pines yesterday, I guess my grandson thought it was more important to stop and shoot some video and pics of the turkeys crossing the course as he made his way down the fairway. Here's one of the hens:

I got out yesterday morning for one last scouting trip before season opens. I feel pretty confident in saying I can locate 8-10 different toms in just one area of the public land I'll be hunting. There was tons of strutting going on but not alot of gobbling. I have a game plan on the approach I'd like to take and I'm feeling pretty good about it. These birds will probably have other plans so I'm going to be as mobile as I possibly can. I'll only be carrying a small chest pack, my chair and my gun. I won't be lugging the decoys around this year. Final prep will be next weekend and I'll be off work for the first 3 weekdays and the weekend to open the season but it all hinges on the no show draw. I'm super excited and anxious for season to open up!

Hunted LBL this weekend was fortunate enough to find an agreeable gentleman to come to the call/decoy. Worked a bird at daylight but not knowing the lay of the land hurt me. After daylight I moved my setup as there was another field on the other side of a 50-60 yard strip that I could not see in the dark. The first bird talked alot but just wasn't interested. I just sat in that strip of small timber and called every so often. Another bird gobbled at the back end of the field so I waited......then heard some drumming and thought well, he's coming but nothing. Turns out, it was behind me and I caught him out of the corner of my eye crossing the strip of timber at an equipment crossing. Lost him for a bit then saw his head bobbing coming down the edge, rounded the corner and went right at the hen decoy. My son heard 5 birds but couldn't close the deal, not the most patient guy! My son in law heard nothing but had about a dozen hogs get within 20 yards of him. Now just need the same kind of luck here in a couple weeks.
