Well, for anyone interested, we only had 1 sow get stuck, I messed up on a blue Butt cross. So she went to the sale barn. Just moved our Duroc sow inside tonight. No need for her to put up with this cold windy weather. She’s due next Wednesday or Thursday, already starting to swell, but no milk yet. Not gonna be surprised if she goes earlier than that, just hopefully not on Christmas Day. Momma won’t appreciate that.

Here she is all comfy inside with a belly full of pigs. I’m putting the over/under at 14.

Red Durocs sure are tasty critters. They say that Berkshires are the best eating, but I honestly can’t tell.

I'll put 10 on the over... Last year she was a gilt and did 11, 9 live births and 2 stillborns. She looks even bigger this year. Got ya down for 10. 🤓

Believe it or not,as much as I love pork, sausage is one of my favorite foods, PERIOD. The one that didn't get bread would have been whole hog sausage at my house. It's surprising how much of it you can sell. Unlike regular sausage, whole hog has exactly what it says, loins, shoulders, hams not just the trimmings. If you get it seasoned right, I will take it over about anything else.

Way back when, since I was a kid, my job was to clip the eye teeth and dock the tails of the piglets. I can remember my friends making fun of me for the stain that the iodine left on my fingers! Is this still a common practice?

Our freezers are pretty full right now, and didn’t have any appointment with any processor, so the sale barn was the easy option for her. May try that whole hog sausage next year.

Is this still a common practice? Yep, we will clip teeth (momma appreciates that), a shot of iron, and cut tails on barrows, but not the gilts. No good reason for the tail thing other than that’s the trend. Some people cut tails, others don’t.

The Rochester sale barn, owned by Vince Hoffman. Went to high school with him. His kids were top notch showman, and he does a lot to support our 4h program.
