Only been out a couple of days so far. My mowing partner at the school has been out of commission. He had a normal out patient surgery procedure that quickly turned non normal as the doctor unknowingly nicked his bladder so in recovery his BP dropped to 87/45 and pulse was 37, luckily they got him squared away. Cameras are active but no good bucks yet but last year nothing showed up til the last weekend of October. The wild persimmon stand I hunt is loaded with em. I stay out of there til the end of October. Plan to get after it next week.

I have replaced 8 tree tube stakes so far, the bucks are hitting them like they used to hit the saplings. The tubes are doing their job (so far). Other than some of the tree tubes being beat up, they are all salvageable but the 1 1/4" sq hardwood stakes were snapped off at ground level. One night alone 6 were snapped all within 100 yards of each other.

My food plot sucks. Well. It’s pretty much dead. The drought sure didn’t help and to be honest I got it out kinda late. Sooo. I was a bit inspired the other day in my tree stand and decided to make a licking branch because of so many other people’s success. I built it yesterday afternoon and during the night and this morning they hit it. I’ve got from what I can count 8 confirmed different visits on it. I did also have a nice buck come by but cannot confirm he hit it.

Look like this weekend might be the best big buck day time activity. Hopefully, a bigger cold front comes in 1st of November.

I'm finally ready for deer season. Last two afternoons I've been shooting the crossbow. All set for 20/30/40 yards. Per September 16th it was mid 90's so I never set up the practice range. The knee replacement to finally practicing a few dozen shots. Hunting this weekend.

Checked zero on three rifles and two slug guns yesterday, everything checked out, didn't have to make any scope adjustments. .257 Weatherby, .308 Browning A-bolt, .270 Ruger 77, 20ga Savage bolt gun & 12ga Savage bolt gun. The shotguns are for Illinois and Iowa, loaning a buddy one.
Have really grown fond of the .308. It's a Browning A-bolt Medallion, walnut stock, blued finish with a Leupold 3x9. Lightweight, good looking rifle with very manageable recoil and a real tack driver. It likes Remington Core Lokt 150 grain loads.

I decided to put a blind in by the pond this evening. I put a scrape tree out as well. 8' cedar post with three oak branches.

Looks like I will hopefully be back into season prep tonight. After losing my tiny piece of archery-heaven site due to the death of the owner and his new wife selling the property, I scored permission to another property just a couple houses down the road. Going to scope it out and hopefully get a stand up this afternoon/evening. Lots of times my first stand site is just a learning experience on where to move the stand later on. I'm excited about getting to hunt the same bunch of deer that I have since 1988. The owner says that he usually sees deer every evening crossing his field into his woods. This woods is about 50 yards wide instead of the 30 yards wide that I had hunted and has a ditch running down through it. I also know a couple people that have properties that back up against his woods that I will probably ask if I can park at their place and access the woods from about an 80 yard walk!

My dad hunted our double stand a few weeks ago and when he did that he put a new strap on it (really just repaired the broken strap..). Have used it a few times since then but nothing ever comes through there within shooting range much anymore. Next up we will have to move and replace another double stand, at a different property, due to 2 of the 3 tree trunks it was situated on being blown down in the past 2 years. I'm not sure when my dad will actually find time so that 2 or 3 of us can go out there and do that.... I'm possibly going to hunt there this weekend and will have to set up our popup blind.

Only place there is good sign is the field edge leading to what is left of an old pond and right at the mud puddle of a pond. Didn't have much choice but to set up back at the old pond dam and only 9' up. But the last several deer I've taken with bow have been no higher than that. Just gonna have to watch the wind and hope it doesn't change on stand.

Took one last confirmation shot each, then cleaned up the guns of choice for this season. Got slings switched over and shell pouches filled. Need a couple scope caps.
Made sure the tree umbrellas were ready.
Suited up with cold weather camo, and tried on all our rain gear. Forecast is looking wet, so getting prepared.
Got the last outside chores done. Cleaned up and put away the tractor implements and covered up. Leaves are handled. Garage is clean. Freezers defrosted and organized. Knives sharp.
Stands are good at all our properties.
Think we are ready to go. Just need some deer to cooperate.
Off work Fri 15th and first week of gun, then a few days off 2nd week. Then a week off in mz.
Let's get this show on the road boys.
