Well, I've got just about everything except my toothbrush packed and ready to go, stacked in the garage. We're pulling out at 0300 tomorrow morning, hope to be at camp in Wyoming by dark.
I'm probably not going to be very productive today at work.

Well, 2019 application season has officially begun. Today I applied for Wyoming bull and cow elk tags. I paid with plastic, but the wallet still feels significantly lighter.

greetings I am completely lost and baffled,,draws and burning points? Our way is much simpler, get permission get loaded up and go, lol. regards Billy Many states have a lottery type system in place for big game licenses. You can either buy a preference point or apply for a license and if you don't get drawn, you get a preference point. Some trophy areas have many hunters applying for a very limited number of tags. The more preference points you have, the better your chances of getting a license. Once you get a license, your preference points revert back to 0 for that species in that state. Some licenses for a particular area and species in a certain state could take more than 10 preference points. You can only get one preference point per year....... If you get a license and don't shoot an animal, you still have burned your preference points and start from square one again.

Thanks for that esshup i sort of half understand your system now. regards Billy And the great thing here is that we have millions upon millions of acres of public land owned by the people.. no begging permission from anyone to access it, it's ours. Limited quotas are required though to protect the resource.

Thanks for that esshup i sort of half understand your system now. regards Billy BUT, that's not that way in every state, nor for every species of animal in states that DO have the lottery system. For instance, in Colorado, cow Elk are usually draw/lottery system for rifle hunters, possibly over the counter for archery hunters, and bull elk tags are over the counter even for rifle hunters. And yes, there are many, many public land areas that you can hunt on. The Federal Government Bureau of Land Management has control of roughly 248 million acres (100,362,039 hectares), and I believe all of it is huntable if you can get access to it. Some is completely surrounded by private land, but I did see a hunting show where the hunter paid a helicopter to drop him off in the public land section so he could hunt it without touching private land. Plus you have land that is owned by each state that you can hunt on also.

Two partners have joined me on the cow elk application. Draw odds were 29% last year, hopefully we'll get lucky. If so we might be hauling a whole lot of meat back home with us.

All very interesting. No public hunting land over her, but if you get permission from the landowner one can hunt anything that is in season with legal firearms and no bag limits completely different to you over there. Regards Billy

I applied for Arizona elk today. Put in for December rifle and muzzleloader hunts, around 20% draw odds.
I should find out about my Wyoming apps here in a couple of weeks.

Purchased my Utah points. Still trying to figure out what areas in Wyoming we want. Might do a waterfowl hunt. Pending pregnancy has a chance to change all that though.

And if you want to hunt some units you have to hire a guide or outfitters due to safety yet they let hikers roam these units without guides. Its hard to understand but I buy lotto tickets also every now and than on the odd chance 😀
