Changing anything seems to get a lot of interesting discussion going on this site! So let's talk about the dates of the youth hunt that just took place. Should it stay the way it is? Move it to another time? What do other states do? Why?
Pros: generally warm outside, early in the year and it's over with, (that's all I can come up with)
Cons: early in the year. Often times it is hot out which could affect deer movement, bugs are generally terrible, crops are still in the fields that lessens sighting and success, leaves are still on trees which lessens line of sight.
Other states: Ohio youth season is just before their gun season during rut.

Considering kids of all ages can hunt our regular season I think the early hunt is just fine.

I no longer have a dog in this fight.
The one thing I would like to see different has to do with the youth season limits.
I would like youth season to have its own stand alone limit of one deer of either sex. That would make youth season deer not count toward statewide limits.

I was hoping for your input Greg! I'm a bow hunter and the parent of 2 kids. I'm giving up all of bow season. Because I intend to take my oldest (and his bow) with me each time he is wanting and has his homework done. So I'll say the 1st or 2nd weekend in November! I mean, it's for the kids, right?

Let me throw another item into the discussion... Little Johnny shoots his first deer at sunset last night. The deer isn't recovered until noon today. The temp has been in the 70s most of the morning. The deer is a spoiled loss. How often does this happen because of the current early season?

I agree the dates are fine. The intent is to make the day just about them. Good story, my son wanted to turkey hunt, it was youth weekend and I said yea, lets go here and then there. He was getting his gear and asked where my gun was. Told him it was youth weekend and only kids were allowed to shoot. He said lets go next weekend when you can hunt with me.
Despite my best efforts to take him out he wasn't going. So we hit the woods the first weekend. He was prob 7 or 8 at the time.

I've made efforts to get my girls into hunting but they just don't care to go....my son turns 4 this November so his time is coming. He will have the opportunity to hunt with me anytime he wants. Not just the special youth season.
With school, sports and the unpredictable weather nobody could ever guarantee a great weekend to have the youth hunt. Make the most of what we have.....

Couldn't happen or less likely to happen? I'm not an idiot Greg. Do I think the majority would support a move to November? Uh no... But you turned this around on bow hunters which I am struggling to see how that is relevant to a discussion about what's best for the youth who participate in the annual youth hunt. This has nothing to do with whether you are a bow or a gun or a crossbow of a blowgun Hunter. It's about parents who take their children hunting on specific weekend that takes place each year and their observations. Would you please add to this discussion by listing the pros and cons of the current youth hunting dates as seen by you?

I like your point here. We made it out for a couple hours Sunday evening. The thermocell kept the bugs away. My son had said he was only shooting a buck. We didn't see a deer. On the way home, he told me he didn't think he wanted to be a buck only Hunter. I told him I didn't think he was ready for that either. So, a lesson was learned and no animals were harmed! Lol

So just a hypothetical, if these November dates occur, guys like me that do not have kids would have to leave their woods and miss some of their favorite times to hunt? Put me in the thumbs down column on that

Xcountry, cheer, b-ball, football, wrestling.....even travel softball is still going on for some. Many kids are so busy they don't have time to do much of anything. Plenty of kids went this past weekend and plenty were successful .... If killing is the measure of success. If just going is the true measure of success, as it really should be, then its all a win.

Kids get from 10/1 until January to hunt if their parents are willing to take them. Why fuss about specially designated "youth weekends"?

Put me in the thumbs down column on that Yep.... And the SAD part of this all is the KIDS are not complaining ..... It's the mentors making all the excuses!!! BTW.......Don't forget that once regular deer season starts that you can still take out the kids. It's how we all started. We didn't need a special youth season to go hunting with Pop. Hunting with Pop was what made it special.

True....mostly. I think the youth season is geared towards the younger kids even though it does include the older kids as well. Hopefully many of the older kids are hunting the regular season with or without mom n dad and I would also hope the younger kids enjoy their special time as it is.
There was no such season when I was a kid and I was still able to go thanks to my dad and a great neighbor who took me bowhunting with him cause dad couldn't bowhunt. Once I got my license I went alone during bow season and with dad during gun.

Put me in the thumbs down column on that I could be wrong, but I don't believe this is the case in Ohio. I believe bow season is still open during their youth hunt. But I'm thinking that mentors are not allowed to be armed if accompanying a youth.

So...basically kids are able to use any weapon during that weekend and those who hunt and don't have kids (or those that dont take their kids) are still able to do their thing with archery gear?
Seems like about as good a compromise as anything.
