I think they're going to cut the fields by this weekend, so I'll keep it cut short until I kill it off. I just have a small sprayer, so this will take some time. I'd like to let it sit two weeks before disking it. So if I'm 3 weeks out for planting, this isn't too early or too late is it?

Have gotten some good rains this afternoon. Close to 1/2 inch and still getting light rain. Hit planting my fall plot's just right. Turnip's should pop right up in a couple days. Went and checked my corn and it's just starting to tassel. Looking good

Steiny, that's a huge food plot. I think of food plots as legal baiting, but eight acres is more for keeping them on your property (land management), yes?
I've got 140 acres all set up as deer habitat. Put some big central food plots in to attract and hold deer on the property best I can, but it's by no means shooting fish in a barrel. 140 Acres isn't big enough to hold them all the time, and this is a heavily hunted area. These deer are spooky.
My food plots have never worked as good as you see on these TV hunting shows, and never will because I don't control enough acreage. What they accomplish is making my property the most attractive property in the neighborhood due to the habitat and the buffet we set up. In turn, the deer spend "more than average" time on my place. You still have to outwit their noses, and catch them during daylight hours.

Got my food plot cut and will spray it on Friday. My daughter helped me cut the grass short. She is a real sport and great helper. I just told her our objective and she went at it. The land slopes down towards the trees. The grass was much higher on this lower end. You can see how high the grass was. I want to put an elevated blind in the middle of this tree row, but if I can't get one, I'll find another spot for something else. It was so fun and rewarding working with my daughter. We had two mowers going. I'll have to rest a week from this.

I'm heading down to my place Saturday if everything works out. I cut and sprayed everything 2 weeks ago so hopefully it's all died off by now.
I've got some no plow mix that hopefully works.
It's always tough since I've got nothing but hand tools, I'm by myself, and it's a long walk in, especially carrying everything. Kind of fun still. Never hunted land I owned before so it's nice to be able to try and improve it for hunting.

I'm so happy for you. I'm very curious how your plot comes in. Make sure to keep us posted. This is my first plot, but it's not my land. I'm so fortunate that this guy likes me enough to let me come and go as I please. My plot is a little big as it stands now. I know it's very close to 1 acre, but I was going for 1/2 acre. It just kept growing. I guess it won't feel like I'm baiting over a bag of corn as most spots will be out of range for my crossbow. I'll just make an easy access point close enough. I'm disabled now, but I can ride an ATV or cut grass. I have plenty of time now that I don't work, so if you want help, I'll be happy to help. I have an ATV and know where a disk implement can be rented. If you want me to disk it for you, I'd be happy to, or you can use my ATV and I'll tell you where the implement is. I have a trailer too if you need it.

Thank you sir, that's very kind of you.
I'll let you know how it turns out, but I'm tempering my enthusiasm. Both my spots are small, maybe 20' X 20' or so. I tried one spot earlier in the year, but I didn't do it right. I cut everything down and broke up the soil a little and put seed down, but without killing the weeds they just came back in and choked everything out. I call that area my "fail plot" now.
Good luck with your plot and good for you on getting your family involved.

Looking north to south Ive got a stand in the bigger trees on the left. Killed a deer 10 straight years here. Got it planted yesterday before all the rain hit. It's a mix of oats, turnips, radishes, clover, peas, sugar beets, and brassicas. I like to have something different at all stages of the fall. It's about 20' wide and 140 yards long.

Yeah. I found a seed company out of Florida that has custom mixes. Then I got extra radishes, turnips, and clover for specific areas. I'm pretty pleased with them. It's who I used for my dove plot too. I think this is year number 6 for this plot. I'm planning on making at least half of this strictly clover next spring. This is a high traffic area that I'm solely trying to slow them down in. Had alot of doe usage and then come late October through the end of season we see bucks like crazy. Biggest we've killed was a 170" gross 12 point. Not bad for 7.75 acres.

What's the company's name?

Not sure if the company is Hancock seed or not , but I have a summer annual blend of their seed in a 1/2 acre plot now . I have been happy with it & will buy from them again , hope to get back on my feet in time to plant some turnips & winter rye before September 1st . I will say if I could only plant one plot it would be a clover & chicory mix as it gets the most pictures out of anything I have planted !

Interesting to note, Beck's planted soybeans on their harvested winter wheat test plots about three weeks ago. Real interested to see their yield numbers. Prime late summer early fall planting time. Had a cool rainy day here followed by sun. Could almost watch my soybeans grow. Beck's are already 4" tall and thick. We are less than two months away from deer season! Good luck to everyone with your food plots.

A deer hunter at church says he has planted Forage Soy Beans at his place in KY and the deer are hitting them big time. Anyone have any experience with them? www.eagleseed.com/Research.html
