Its a fact that 78% (thats avg. of past 5 years) of the modern firearm harvest comes in the first 9 days of firearm season.
With less than 22% of the harvest coming from the next 7 days of modern firearm season, you can see that this shortening of the season will affect a much smaller percentage of hunters than you might think.

"Need" is very subjective. I want the full 16 days of gun plus the 16 days of MZ plus the 90+ days of bow seasons. Shortening any season should only be done if the herd is in a serious population decline - which ain't ever going to happen.

"Need" is very subjective. I want the full 16 days of gun plus the 16 days of MZ plus the 90+ days of bow seasons. Shortening any season should only be done if the herd is in a serious population decline - which ain't ever going to happen. I couldn't agree more, but the fact is people that think like that are a minority. Major changes are going to happen to our hunting seasons, like it or not. Comparing numbers, even the numbers that i've posted here, are pointless when you compare them to the unknown. And the unknown are the harvest information that will happen from 2011-2015. I know i would have never believed that Indiana hunters would be killing more bucks per year going to the OBR, but its a fact that we are killing more bucks per year. I say instead of trying to get the DNR to keep it the way it is (cause that NOT gonna happen), but to compromise in some sort of way. Hopefully to NOT cut the season back too far. Just my .02 |

Every hunter in this state thats who, includeing me .I am glad that there are those who are clairvoiant enough to know when they will kill their deer and know that there could not be any obsticals like work illness or family obligations that just pop up or are planed last minute .Some young hunters are like young bucks and do not see beyond the tip of their nose.

The best season I ever had I killed a 9 pointer on the last day of the modern gun season and a nice doe on the last day of the MZ season. These two were the only opportunities I had to take a deer. Didn't pass any. Didn't see any others.

I have had some of those seasons myself, schoolmaster. I've also had seasons where several have fallen the first weekend. I need more than 9 days. I have 2 kids I dedicate most of my woods time to getting deer. I sign up for Park huntd to have extra chances to put deer in the freezer.
I'm sorry, anything that reduces opportunity and makes things more difficult and possibly dangerous to the hunters is simply the wrong choice.

It shows 20,427 deer were harvested in the last 7 days of Firearm Season and 14,290 of them were antlerless. That is 70 percent antlerless. |

"In 1993, 87% of Indiana's deer hunters indicated that they did not want the firearm season to be moved from mid-November [the perceived peak of the rut]. Both surveys show that the large majority of Indiana deer hunters want a high degree of flexibility in their personal freedom to choose when and how to deer hunt and do not want their deer hunting opportunities reduced."
Straight from the DNR!
And I need for than the "8" days.

How many people can hunt 9 days? A 9 day season will mean 2 or 3 days for a lot of people, not for me but this will hurt a lot of hunters, not all are blessed with the ability to hunt for a week, should they be penalized for having a job, kids, church, responsibilities, and a life? Putting family on notice, if this passes, NO weddings, baby deliveries, sporting events, school activities, awards banquets, illness, accidents, emergencies or deaths any where near hunting season. ;D |

Duck season is 60 days long. I do not hunt all 60 just the days that the birds are on the move.
The same goes for squirrel, rabbit and deer.
I want as many days as possible to hunt and harvest the number of animals within the set limits as I need. Not greed just opportunity.

I never needed 2-1/2 months to kill a deer in archery either, but I have always enjoyed each and every day available trying it. Just like the 32 days I enjoy using my muzzle loader trying. Tagging a deer is just part of a successful hunt. The enjoyment I get out of watching a yearling fawn nursing from its mom, the enjoyment I get out of watching a 1-1/2 year old basket rack buck dogging a doe in heat makes for me a successful hunt.

I shot both of my deer last year in the very last 3 days of muzzy, so i guess i needed it.
