CANNED HUNTING IS DEAD ! However- Hunting and the Hunting Preserves is alive and well because the voice of sportsmen and reason have been heard. This entire assault came from the Humane Society and a few of their members embedded within the sportsmens groups. Fortunately 81% of the people weighing in on the subject at the public meetings supported the hunting preserves. NOBODY supports canned hunting or drugging deer and all that BS. That scenerio is like the Humane Society trying to end hunting and using poachers as the reasoning. Poachers are a very small percentage of sportsmen and we should not take the fall for their actions, just like the well run preserves should not take the blame for the canned hunting places.

If you`re huntin` inside a fence, it ain`t fair chase, and it IS a canned hunt.
These business, and anyone who visit`s them are sleazy. Indiana has more than enough white-tails to hunt, and anyone who has to go to a pen hunt to "score" can`t be a hunter.

It was the second hardest hunt I've ever been on. It was a large enough enclosure that it didn't feel like a canned hunt. Don't plan on ever going again but it was a fun experience for something not availible here.

I work very hard at hunting free-ranging animals all across this country. I know many folks in the business of hunting that DO hunt preserves.... I consider many of those guys my friends. Many of them are just as adequate in the field as I am, but they choose to hunt preserves. Each of us have the decision to make, do we participate in preserve hunting or not... I choose not... but then again I don't go to Casinos, Golf Courses or the Movie Theatre. Anything can be percieved as negative by the right people in the right setting... but rallying the troops to abolish each practice we don't "Agree with" or can't afford is just plain wrong. I hold no ill feelings towards those who disagree with preserves, disagree with the OBR or support crossbows... I'm right there with you in some capacity... it's just to what extreme you project your opinions that bothers me. That is a good response!!!!! Great "quote" JRB!!! My thoughts exactly. Except I dont go around the country and only know 2 guys that raise whitetails.

The only high fence I have hunted was at Big Oaks and Attebury....didn't have to pay but I did hunt them!!!!
I don't like the high dollar & high fence places, but it's obvious that some folks do. I wish the state would have never allowed them to begin with, but I can see where some of the folks have made a business investment with the understanding that the state was allowing the places.
I can see where there should be some kind of considerations.....as long as the customers follow the letter of the law when they are in there killing, I can live with it.
The practice is NOT for me......but it's where antler obsession has led us!!!!!

JRB: Get your facts straight... data on non-compliance by high fence ops in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota is a matter of public record and available on their respective DNR websites, so don't even try arguing your boys are all following the rules because the FACT is they are not. WOW !! I guess you can use the same logic with poachers......lot of folks get cited for not following the rules.....THAT DON'T MAKE US ALL BAD!!!!!!

Gee I wasn't aware that those Amish families at the meetings were really hunters and sportsmen. Spike I seem to recall your saying Bellars would be found innocent and would be booked solid for years to come. Hey he was your hero not ours.

I give Governor Daniels credit for understanding that this was not a fight the state could afford to fight to the fullest win or lose and I am not talking about the legal bills from the inevitable lawsuit. No matter how the case would have been ruled, allowing judges to set precedence and make rulings on hunting and wildlife issues has the potential to cause far greater harm than allowing high fenced operations to operate a for a few more years.

Obviously Big Oaks or Atterbury is hardly a "high fenced hunt". I have hunted those places and I am totally not into hunting behind a fence. If you hunt a high fenced place just to get a trophy head with minimal time and effort spent then your head is worth no more than those talking deer heads they sell at Cabelas. the problem is your head cost thousands of dollars and doesn't even talk. I guess the question for me is not whether it's right or wrong, it's why would you?

The only high fence I have hunted was at Big Oaks and Attebury....didn't have to pay but I did hunt them!!!! It cost my friend and I $15.00 each to hunt Big Oaks three years ago and $20.00 a piece at Crane. Big Oaks has a 6-8 foot chain link fence around it but Crane did not. On the south end of Crane its a 4 ft farm fence boardering the grounds. h.h.

People hunt high fence preserves for the SAME reason people hunt the high fence Military places. The Hunting Pressure is controlled and the deer are bigger because they are allowed to mature. It is just that simple. Justify it how ever you can live with it, but the scenerio is the same. If the State had a good management program there would be no need for high fence preserves. But too many sportmen rally to kill kill kill which gives us seasons that causes over 80% of Indiana deer to be killed at 1 1/2 old.
The fence is not used to kill the deer, it is used to manage the negative effects that causes true hunters to give up the sport. Overhunting, slob hunters, poachers and brown and downers. People have the right to shoot every 6 moth old fanw that walks, People also have the right to pay to hunt a place where that does not exist.
Canned Hunting exist on both sides of the fence. I personally feel shooting deer under 3 1/2 in the wild is canned hunting. Sportsmen can go out and shoot those animals all day long without effort- to me that is canned hunting. But sportmsen have the right to do that just like sportsmen have the right to pay to hunt a place where that does not exist.

I have seen many deer jump the fence at Big Oaks. They certainly aren't confined by it.

Well this is the type of thread that usually lands me in some sort of trouble. I have watched it with great amusement as I see the "spin doctors" are back. Not to mention those that consider a 6 foot fence containment for a whitetail deer! ( You hunt long enough you will see them them clear that with plenty of room to spare!) Oh I also wanted to say hello to my good friend Spike! Nice to see you! JRB, You claim you have no financial interest in the High fence killing pens. Do you have any family ties with any of them? Sorry folks but any way you try and spin it, if you are shooting a non free-ranging animal then you ARE NOT HUNTING! You are merely killing and you are only doing that for bragging rights and to bolster your low self esteem.......... Of course, thats just my opinion. I may be wrong. Silly me to think that ethics matter in the world of hunting. It seems fairly evident that they don't seem to matter much anywhere else in our society these days.

Gundude- Good to hear from you, I am feeling pretty good How about you ? I feel good because any time we as true sportsmen can take measures to protect and promote hunting and the hunting heritage it is a good feeling. I must say the little old laddies of the humane socitey and their handfull of partners in the sportsmens group gave a good fight-- but the true sportmen prevailed. As your friend I would like to offer some advice. The next time you wish to tackle an issue like this, give me a call. I will help educate you and plan your attack so you don't come up short "again"and make a fool or yourself trying to pit sportsmen against sportsmen. This was all about education. When people got educated they saw the need to stop canned hunting but save the hunting preserves. Those who did not get educated still rant and prove their lack of knowledge on the subject. When the entire room stood up at Indy in support of the preserves that should have been your first clue. When you align yourself with the humane society you know the sportsmen will not stand beside you but stand with us and the hunters as they did on this issue. Have a great day and tell the little old ladies the sportsmen said Hi ! ;D

seems logical that if "sportsmen" supported the killing pens then the major suppliers of hunting gear would would support your cause as well. You wouldnt have a list of such companies would you Spike? I know I have a list a mile long that are against it. Kind of stupid for them to align themselves up with "little old ladies" and the humane society don't ya think?.... Nice try Spike.
