Let me know if you are interested in a silver 2x Weaver handgun scope. It is just sitting in the box in my garage and it is in wonderful shape. Just an option for ya...

I had surgery this morning and it looks like I won't be hunting for two weeks! I had a stomach hernia repaired, but all is well for the most part. Good luck to all and I hope to rejoin you afield by the 2nd weekend in gun season.

The first buck I ever shot was with a bow and it was at 25 yards quartering towards me. I am an extremely confident shot, so I let the arrow fly and took out the near lung and severed the femural artery. The buck bled like nothing I have ever seen before and was stone dead within sight of my stand. I think he traveled 50 yards or so. Looking back I realize that my shot placement had to be surgical or I could have simply wounded the deer for no good reason. It is such a low percentage shot that moving forward I will primarily focus on quartering away or the broadside shot.

Steve, Although I am a young man at 29, I can still say "I get it." Another well written, thoughtful post by Steve! You have been a great addition to this site as I am sure many others would agree, so I will close now and say "keep on typing brother!"

Dick's has a great deal on the 700 varmint rifles through this friday for $450.00! This includes a camo stock, x-mark trigger, heavy 26" barrel and a scope. The available calibers are .223, .22-250, and .308. Any ideas or suggestions? I am picking one up this week.

I took my wife's 11 year old nephew bowhunting for the first time this evening. He has a few gun hunts under his belt, but nothing in the early season. His dad is more of a gun hunter and I am the only bowhunter in the family, so I offered to take him afield. First, I watched him practice at 15 yards and then at 20 yards on my range and I gave him some encouragement and a few tips. This seemed to help his confidence and his accuracy and he was excited about our hunt. I took him to my favorite ridge top ladder stand and secured his bow to the gear rope and he climbed on up. I watched him attach himeself to the tree with his harness and I made him demonstrate that there was no slippage on his tie off rope. He pulled his bow up and I told him which areas the deer would come from. I went to a ladder stand about 75 yards away and we hunted for about 2 hours. Neither of us saw any deer, but we both heard a buck grunting and we could hear deer come up out of the bottoms and walk around just out of our eye's range. When it started to get dark we headed back to my house and he told his parents that he had a blast and he was hooked for life. He now has a bow, a new 20 gauge, and a nice muzzleloader so I doubt that will be our last hunt together. The number of hunters in our family keeps getting smaller so I will do what I can to pass along the traditions of the outdoors to the younger ones, the right way. My 4 year old wants to start shooting a bow so bad he can't stand it as well. Its just a matter of time before he pursues deer for the first time with stick and string also.

This time of year I have a productive ridge top stand with some heavy producing white oaks all around me. It is also need a very thick bedding area. I also hunt the side of ridge tops where the funnels lead top the bottoms with good success.

The only self defense pistols I have right now are in .45acp and .380. I like the .45acp and the 9mm, in that order, because of ammo availability everywhere. I enjoy the 40, but prefer the 10mm over all mentioned calibers, which is a 40 with a slightly longer case and more power. I once had one and will likely buy another someday in a 1911 platform. Bullet placement is the key and all will do the job though....

I used my T/C a few years ago and dropped a Doe at 168 yards. She dropped like a sack of hammers. But I am getting ready to invest in a new Marlin 44 mag lever action and was told that I should be comfortable at 250 to 300 yards... Looking forward to it. Being completely realistic, 250 to 300 feet sounds more realistic. I have owned several .44s and like anything else you have got to know it's limitations.

Woody, I caught this rascal sneaking by my stand at last shooting light. A 4 blade muzzy to the heart and lung changed his attitude in a hurry! Put me down for this 2 point buck that I took in an urban zone yesterday evening. ;D SCORED...
CONGRATULATIONS...

Couldn't sleep much last night because of our new born and because I am eager to get into the woods this morning. I just stepped into the backyard and man is it cool outside! The sky was crystal clear and it should be a good weekend in the woods. Good luck and safe hunting to all and I am looking forward to some good stories from today...
