Then why sign up for a reduction hunt if you aren't going to shoot? Many people sign up and don't get drawn that I'm sure would love a chance at some meat. To be honest, an extra buck. Because it's my tag to do with as I wish. Again every guy I talked to passed deer on both days of the hunt. Trust me, the vast majority does in my experience with every park hunt I've been on. Why kill a deer just to kill it and give it away or kill a deer for 30 pounds of meat if I'm lucky. I'm not kill happy. Don't need to build my ego. Why do people go to park hunts, kill a deer, and donate it. Same scenario. You're killing a deer just to kill it. If rather let a deer live than just kill it to build my ego and say I killer x amount of deer in a year. Because that's the whole point of signing up for a reduction hunt. It's just as unethical to sign up for a reduction hunt and not do what you signed up for as it is any other way. If you want to trophy hunt then stick with private or other areas don't take a spot from someone that would gladly go in and do what the state asks. I dont care what the others that hunted the reduction do, you just made it public like you were bragging about it.

There’s so many others that do the same thing in these hunts. They see them as a bonus hunt to get the chance at an extra buck and some choose to wait for that extra to be a trophy. Span is far from the only person that passes deer at these hunts. Heck quite a few will quit as soon as they have antlers on the ground. They have no desire to kill does just for meat. He’s just stating his way of doing things, but plenty of others follow the same way.

Unethical??? Expalin how what im doing is unethical. Why kill something if i dont need it? Youre saying id have more ethics if i blasted 3 yearlings that wouldnt have gave me 100 pounds of meat total? You can't be serious. What's more unethical? Me passing sub par deer or someone killing something just to kill something and donating a deer away just to say they killed something. If anything me not killing a yearling to allow it to live as opposed to someone just shooting anything brown to say they did shows I have more ethics. Again. My tag to do as I wish. Yours to do with as you see fit. I'll continue to do me you do you. I've passed over 100 deer this year alone. I'll continue to do it.
By no means bragging. Just telling a story. Would you bash someone that shot a 30 pound dressed deer? If not why bash someone that let the same walk.

It's an extra tag that the state gives you agreeing you will kill the first deer you see. So yes a small deer if that is what you see first would be ethical. If you want to pass on deer then quit signing up for reduction hunts. I would tell anyone the same. We can agree to disagree.

I dont care what the others that hunted the reduction do, you just made it public like you were bragging about it. Ok I am in trouble here but I have the answer here. Cancel all park hunts and bring in sharp shooters to remove the extra does because the people that said they would remove them because it is a reduction hunt are not doing it. Or make ALL park hunts doe only hunts so the guy that was trying to do what he was ask to do gets the shaft when a big buck happens to walk by and now he cannot shoot it and the guy that would not shoot does can cry in his beer because he now has NO chance of killing an extra buck. I remember when the park hunts first started and the buck was a bonus because they didn't have enough hunters in some places to fill all slots. Now there is an abundance of hunters and lots of hunters do not get drawn to do what is ask. The license you speak of is not really a license but a contract between the state, park and you to hunt said park on 2 specified days to reduce the herd to stop over population and forest distruction. If you are passing deer for any reason OTHER than it was not a good shot you are not fulfilling your part of the contract.going to a park hunt and giving the deer away is NOT the same. that person did what they were ask and now they can give to the needy. Possibility the only way they have available. Please remember these are my opinions and I hope they give reason to think and not aimed at anyone in particular but if the shoe fits? Woody if this is to controversial please delete it as I will under stand ONEBENTARROW Edited to add. If the state ever realizes that if they made the park hunts doe only they could kill more deer with fewer hunters because those hunters are not passing deer and doing what they were ask to do the EXTRA buck option would disappear in a heart beat.

I'd have to say I agree about the reduction hunt. It is about ego if your passing deer, a yearling is easy to drag, easy to butcher, tastes great. They tell you when you apply "This is a reduction hunt, please do not pass deer." I think that pretty much sums it up. I will plan on shooting and being tagged out and out of the cold ad soon as possible.

Not sure I be posting what I passed at a park hunt…. Just saying! A lot of eyes read here…. If they figure it out they can ban me. Pretty sure they know most do. I'm not killing something just to say I killed something. If that's what they want, ban away. The park people know the numbers are where they need to be. It's just a sustaining mode now. No growth That has happened in the past according to a post someone else made. Folks were trophy hunting and telling others then the park people put them on a list. Surprised that person hasn't spoken up in this thread.... Believe the park was Versailles Some things are better left unsaid IMO Camp Atterbury looks to be more of Trophy hunt you should be happy there...Good luck!

The state could make the park hunts earn a buck. That would give the hunters a reward for killing an antlerless deer.

I don't fault Span there's plenty of guys passing deer out there and as stated no UTV helping a guy get them out is a tough way yo go for a lot of guys. As you all know I hunt a lot of public ground decisions are made on if I want to drag that deer all the way back to the truck. UTV's used by DNR would be an incentive to shoot what comes by.

There has to be a reason they stopped the UTV use IMO Personally How I hunt and what and where I hunt I keep to myself to a degree.Life lesson learned….

From my experience they ran the UTV at lunch time along the main trail. This was at Lincoln, they may have had a run or two in the evening as well. So all you had to do was get your deer to the main trail and be patient. I had a deer down at the trail and the UTV guys drove up asked where my truck was and said the deer would be in the truck when I got back. He said if I wanted to hunt some more he'd run back by later to pick up more deer. You are right, you'll never please everyone though.

Hunt how you want and when you want. I don't remember you asking for opinions on how you should hunt. If others don't like it they can hang with earl. Pitts off I say..

Make the park doe only and you'll see how many guys do just as I do.

I am absolutely stunned the animosity towards what I did. The same people would lose their mind if I bought the property next to them and killed every deer I seen. Most would lose their mind if i went county to county with my lifetime stacking up yearling does and lord save me if i did it with button bucks. With the park hunts there is no contract. It is a "reduction" the same as every hunting trip you make. DNR sets the season for a reduction. I'm sure very few shoot the first 3 deer they see on a bundle license. So I go to atterbury with their 16" minimum length, do I shoot the first 17" buck I see? It's also a "reduction". Managing and reducing the herd are the same thing. One just sounds better.
As far as banning me, let them. Honestly I've hunted about all park and hunt draws there are. Very few times I've ever put in I didn't get drawn. Why would that be when many don't? I always show. I always hunt both days and I'm always usually one of the last ones out of the park. This just seems more and more like some are angry that they don't get drawn.

You had no issues with volunteering to help me if need be. Looking forward to hunting with you again. Parks, Private or Public. Keep doing you.

It may also not line up with the state’s deer management goals.

It has done nothing other than increased the doe harvest. So I will keep making it my Christmas wish.
