So bolo I guess. ( Sometimes things get lost in my email )
A lot of ideas to simplify licenses, most of which made sense. One that didn't to me was making Archery and Muzzy tags buck only. That will create a lot of confusion. I was surprised to see an idea for a velvet deer season. I was somewhat alarmed when they suggested age restrictions in the same breath, because there is no doubt in my mind that it's a backdoor way of slipping that stuff into the regular season. There was also a section on going to a trophy management season, raising the spectre of counting points and the like. No offense, but I voted no thanks.
Here is what I put in the comments section:
First off, What does my education level, race, and income level have to do with deer management, unless you plan to weight my opinions based on this information, a dubious yardstick.
Secondly, let me say that I think the DNR largely does a good job managing the deer herd, given the complexities of the task. That said, I detect the slow creep of trophy management dogma into the conversation. Notions like point and width restrictions are the antithesis of scientific deer management, as using these antler traits as a barometer of health and age is "ballpark" at best. It's TV science meant to sell deer management products.
A trophy management system punishes people that have less time to sit and be picky. Forcing a working stiff to pass a smaller buck when he saves a lot of money feeding his/her family with that meat is poor management. Not everybody gets unlimited time to just sit in the woods waiting on a certain deer. Personally, I don't want to pass an obvious adult buck because it's dim and I can't count his points or stretch a tape across his antlers. Opportunities are often fleeting.
I saw a lot of nice bucks last year. leave well enough alone.
Thank you all for your work.

Interesting questions for sure. Didn’t like the part where they asked about taking deer to processors. I chose never, but then there are two more pages of questions to skip over. If never is chosen it should move to the next section.

When studying surveys it is best to not conclude or assume anything, sadly that means at times some very repetitive or can seem redundant questions.

I get that, but a simple if/then statement in the code would fix that. If I never go to a processor there’s no reason to ask how many miles I’d travel, etc. for two more pages. It’s just the IT guy coming out in me.

This would be like asking someone have you hunted public land last five years; no - and then assuming they have no opinion or thoughts on public land. I'm a solid example has been years since I've actually hunted Pigeon River up here, but I still have maps and aerials and notes I have stored of sign and trips I've made over the years there and plan on doing a spring or two trip for scouting as I may hunt it this next year if I keep losing spots.

It allows the analysts to remove data if there is a discrepancy in the way the repeated questions are answered.

Got mine and answered it today. Also took the "no thanks" approach to the trophy management but might not have come across that nice. Somehow I think the trophy potential in my area is pretty solid the way things currently are.

LOL, I must be really slow at typing, just took me 50 minutes to complete mine. I did give them a lengthy opinion at the very end.

Got mine yesterday. My reply to the velvet thing was only if they make it available to hunters with all weapons, not one specific one.
In the comment section at the end I told them that they needed more CO's and they needed to increase the biologists pay - why have good people use this as a starter position then jump ship to the private sector - pay the same as the private sector.

The DNR would love to pay their people better. The legislature has to increase their budget to be able to do so.
