Disgusted, had a 30 yd broadside shot at a big 8 and the cap didn't go off. Dang it! I need to fix you up with a high performance smokeless gun!

Dang it! I need to fix you up with a high performance smokeless gun! I need me a high performing smokeless gun maybe? I feel like I don't see many deer during muzzy season. I may be wasting my money. But I don't have alot of faith in the muzzy I have now. I'm going to replace it by next year, just not sure with what. Buy a CVA.45-70 rifle and have Jeff Fisk in southern Indiana install a breechplug in it, thus converting it to a smokeless .45 caliber muzzleloader.

Not the long range model. Zeroed at 100 yards. I'd push it to 200+ yards with no ethical concerns

Yes, you could use a Scout, Apex, and probably even a Hunter. There are a few smiths doing the conversions, but I figured I'd mention Jeff since he is in Indiana and is well liked. I'd hate to guess on a conversion charge, but it seems like one that accepts 209 primers is around $200 (or maybe less). Send me a message if you want to discuss options, smiths, etc.

For instance, I had an Encore 45/70 barrel converted by simply threading to take a Savage plug. Cost me $100. It was someone highly recommended and did excellent work, but no ramrod storage on the gun. And that is exactly what I asked for to keep cost low. Ramrod rides in the backpack along with the coveralls that I don't wear while walking.

Still smokeless intritgues me.

Honestly wish I had done that instead of the full bolt gun build.

Ramrod rides in the backpack along with the coveralls that I don't wear while walking. I bought a 3-piece collapsible one from Arrowhead that deploys quickly when pulled from the pouch. My conversion is the large rifle magnum primer conversion on a CVA Apex done by Jeff Hankins in Kentucky.

Nice to hear we are picking up at least a few in Indiana that are producing smokeless muzzleloaders.

Mine is still brand new. Lol! My plan was to tag out before muzzleloader season so that I wouldn't have to buy a scope yet. I cut it too close, and wouldn't have been ready in time, so I took a buck on the last evening of gun season. Now I have all the time in the world to save up for a scope. Lol!

Smokeless isn't fool proof either....
I think if handled with the utmost care and attention to detail both smokeless and substitute inline guns (lit by 209's) will go bang every time without fail.

I decided to go smokeless for three reasons:
1. You can shoot it and put it in the safe uncleaned like a centerfire rifle and not have to worry about corrosion.
2. You can see if you hit a deer without waiting on the smoke to clear.
3. 2500 FPS seems to be the norm, and I've seen mention of at least one doing 4000 FPS.
