I have an older Ruger Standard semi auto and two of the newer MKII target pistols with the bull barrels, A little Ruger Bearcat single action, a Ruger Single Six with both 22LR and Magnum cylinders, an old High Standard double action (old beater trapping pistol), and a Jam O Matic semi auto Jennings that is pretty well worthless, I got it in a trade for a junk chainsaw, and last a Colt peacemaker 22. That's about it for the 22's I have. I can recommend them all but the cheap Jennings. I don't know what they cost now days, but I got all of these under your price several years ago. I doubt you can get any of these new in your price range but the Jennings now and I would not even think of buying one of those . You probably can find some used ones for a deal if you look for them.

I bought a ruger SR22 last summer and I love it. Feels and shoots just like a good quality 9mm semi auto but the ammo is a lot easier on the wallet. It's on my hip anytime I'm in the woods. It's light enough that I forget I'm wearing it most of the time. It has some nice features like the front rail for a laser sight. I think you can get a threaded barrel for them also.

I bought a sr22, last June. It is my first semi auto handgun, and I wanted to learn with a .22. I've shot that little handgun more, than my other 3 handguns, put together!

I agree with the Jennings. The only round that mine will shoot reliably are CCI Stingers. I believe they are a little stronger so it will work that slide enough. Still wouldn't recommend it. My choice is the Ruger Single Six if a revolver is what you want.

I don't know if you like 1911's, but I have a desert tan GSG 1911 in .22 LR. It feels and functions just like my Ruger 1911, just slightly lighter.

In a 22lr I can't say any more than what has been said and stay around your money. I shoot a high standard victor. It will out shoot me and you.Nice to know every miss is me and not the gun.I have no idea what they go for but if you find one at $400 buy it and I'll reimburse ya! It's an Olympic-grade target pistol.
Since you stated "22 pistol" I have to consider the magnum in that. For a 22 mag it's the kel-tec pmr-30 hands down!It weighs 14 oz.,is 1 1/4" wide and it's an auto loader. It's clip fed and they are 30 round clips. You can comfortably carry a couple extra clips in your hip pocket. It has enough stopping power to drop anything in the woods(at least in Indiana) will punch thru a second chance vest and about the same priced ammo as the 17hmr.You can carry this thing all day long fully loaded with 2 extra clips and the 90 round total and not know by the weight you have it on.And the biggest thing is"I WANT ONE"! I have owned a Ruger MK I for 35 yrs and also a newer MKIII for a couple yrs. They have performed flawlessly and are very accurate and I shoot them religiously. If you decide on a Ruger MK ? I would get the new MK IV they redesigned it to take down with no issues. The MK III and older can be difficult to take down and clean.

Been looking at the 22/45 lite ruger myself. Seem to have a good following but that's all the input I can give on them.

My grandson's first gun I bought for him is a Walther P22. Nice semi auto pistol. Lives in my safe. We still get it out for fun 5 years later. Adjustable sights. Decent trigger. It will make your price point

I have a Ruger Mark 2 and LOVE IT! It's way more accurate than the guy pulling the trigger (me,lol). They haven't changed the design much in the many decades of its existence- IF IT AIN'T BROKE,DON'T FIX IT!
