I haven't heard of any HPR accidents, but do know of two shotgun related accidents. One being a slug and the other being buck shot removing a couple fingers and chin bone from one not so safe individual.

I went to college with a guy that had a side lock muzzleloader nearly kill him. He was in a tree stand, fell asleep and dropped his gun. As it slid through his fingers the hammer hit the stand hard enough to discharge the cap. 50 cal slug ripped through his thigh, just past his artery and out past his head. He was extremely lucky. It was a horrific scar. Of course that was 20+ years ago and nothing to do with hpr but the stories about people doing dumb things and close calls reminded me of that.
Then there was the family I grew up with from kindergarten through high school. The oldest brother was a moving accident. I saw him shoot his own hat off with a shotgun after a rabbit hunt. Shucking the shells out of an old mossberg 500 and slid out from his hands. When the butt of the gun hit the porch the gun discharged leaving some pellets in his artic lined carhart and blowing his hat off his head. Another time he was home by himself, probably 18 or 19 yrs old with his first pistol...playing fast draw in his mom's mirror...sent a slug through the closet. His younger brother, was in my grade and had one of the old cheap SKS. He thought was empty, pulling the action open and leting it slam shut while sitting on the couch...after the 3rd or 4th pull he poked a hole in the roof of his mom's house! I quit hunting with the guys after the shotgun incident. They were great guys just a bit reckless.

When I was a kid, I remember one of my cousins tossing his shotgun in his truck to go squirrel hunting and it went off and killed him.
I'm a bit clumsy, so I'm very careful with my gun. I survived the "widow maker"; I don't want to do something stupid and kill myself.

Got into an argument with my brother-in-law at Christmas over this. He says there have been all sorts of HPR-related accidents this season (ie: buildings getting shot and such). I asked for details and all he said was "well there have been several". I continued to argue the point with him and added that I haven't seen anything reported on Nixle and the only thing I've seen about it was a posting on facebook which was later confirmed to be a target shooting incident. He then changed the subject and said that it was "unsportsmanlike" to shoot a deer that was more than 100 yards away.
I decided to drop the subject with him since it was heading towards ugly and I didn't want to mess up Christmas with the family.
Some people just can't stand to be proven wrong about a "belief" they've held for a long time. I maintain that I think there are a lot of fudds who have become complacent with shotguns and muzzleloaders who are probably a lot LESS safe with those weapons than most people who used HPRs this season.
I think after this year's deer season is over, we are going to find out the sky is still up and all the doom and gloom we've heard all year never materialized.

My opinion on buildings, houses, etc. being shot from stray hpr shots is: The VAST MAJORITY of incidents are not from "hunters",they are from vandals, road hunters and such. However many "stray" rifle bullets that caused property damage this year is probably about the same amount as any other year. Just my opinion.....

Most of my damage comes from mother nature. Sun, wind, rain, snow, sleet, ice, hail, great horn owls, Red wing hawks, mice, tree rats, ants, termites and all that I missed. Like .00001 from bullets. Maybe better odds from outer space junk and or meteorites.

Funny you say that, there is a street sign next to our hunting property that had a lot of new .223 sized holes in it that I just noticed when deer season started. Didn't notice the holes when we were putting up stands a month prior to deer season...

On a related note, my BIL shot an arrow straight through his garage roof this past summer "sky-drawing" his bow.

Arguing with some people is like standing in a 5gal bucket and pulling on the handle. We were at my parents' house Christmas Eve and the neighbors were doing some shooting. My extremely liberal FIL was throwing a fit and wanted to call the city police (out of jurisdiction), Sheriff (they live in the county, shooting is legal), and finally the state police (once again, shooting is legal). While i will agree that the shooting may have been in poor taste given it was Christmas Eve and the were obvious family gathering in the neighborhood, the underlying and undisputable fact was that shooting is legal in county. I eventually just gave up and went about my business.

I've often wondered, since a lot of the fighting in Europe during World War II was over populated areas, how many people were killed by spent rounds falling on their heads or shell casings falling several thousand feet. You can watch youtube videos of the fighters in aerial combat or strafing ground targets and those 50 caliber shell casings are pouring out of the bottom of the wings!
