The little 7.62 X 39 MM is a fine short range load for deer under 100 yards. I have a CZ-527 chambered in that caliber, but also at one time owned a Ruger M-77 MKII in 7.62 X 39 MM and shot 7 deer with it including a head shot on a Buck @ an even 100 yards. Never lost a deer using this caliber and it is ideal for a recoil shy or beginning deer hunter. I am guessing the brand of ammo you're using is WOLF BRAND 123 grain hollow point?? I used my reloads for deer and used Winchester older Silvertip bullet 150 grain for the .30-30 Win. with IMR-4198 powder (23.0 grains) in Winchester brand brass. I was going to ask the same along with rifle type. I'm using what I call my Ak15 or AR47 if you like. Currently using remington soft points but only have 6 left so may be back to the wolf mc sp, as I can't find the remington again. Yes I have shot two deer with tula 123 grain hollow points. They shoot to same poi as tula fmj out of my rifle. First deer with this ammo was a buck at 60 yards.very small entrance and good expansion. Right through the heart and golf ball size exit. Second was the doe and this time the bullet seems to have split in half lengthwise. Don't laugh but gun is a SKS rifle which I refurbished the stock on this summer. Gun is a good shooter and I have been impressed by this caliber even with inexpensive HP's.

Had the military stock replaced with a laminated more sportier, removed the bayonet & cleaning rod & lugs, replaced the 10-shot magazine with a fixed 5-shot one, and installed a peep sight instead of the issued rear sight. Stock is made by Reinehart Fajen, of Warsaw, Mo. very accurate but I've never used it for hunting.

I got a medium sized buck at 220 yards with a .308, last Friday, like 15 minutes before the sky OPENED UP. Trolling through the facebook post, I found the below. Seems it wasn't a hunting thing, at all, but target practice. "Brian Jennings- Sad thing is this wasn't a hunting accident. This is a good friend of mines barn. Those 3 holes are 8 feet off the ground and came from 700 yards away. Neighbor was "target shooting""

Shooting Hornady Z-Max 123 gr brass case ammo, I get 1" groups at 100 yards. However, it doesn't like their steel case SST rounds as those seem to only get 4" groups at 100 yards. It also shoots Herter's soft point ammo in 1" groups at 100 yards, but these are bi-metal bullets (copper and steel jacket with lead tip) which don't expand too well in ballistic gelatin (according to several youtube videos I've watched). So make sure you check the Wolf ammo to see if the bullet itself will stick to a magnet - if it does, it is probably bi-metal, which probably isn't the best choice for hunting.

Guy I work with in ky says he shot his at 621 yards. Said that he had to take the land owner back to the spot that he was shooting from to confirm his story. I don't know that I would even recognize a deer at that distance with the naked eye.

Monthly during the winter months. Ive shot as good as .4 MOA at 200 and shoot .6-1MOA at 400 regularly. I use a fixed 16x scope

Since being able to use a regular centerfire rifle in Indiana I have taken one doe at 23 yds. In the State Park Hunt, I shot another doe at about 85 yards (slug gun) and I shot a forkhorn buck in Wisconsin at about 25 yds with the same .243. Bullet entered at the base of the neck and exited the scrotum. Never took a step. Who said a .243 won't penetrate?
Different rifle, different states, Cow Elk at 705, Coyote at 867.
And yes, I do practice and keep records. I practice distance shooting as often as I can, and have practiced to a hair over 1350 yds.

Really want to drop at deer at 400 And this is where Deer hunting is replaced with Deer Shooting I hate seeing this happening . Being able to just get a deer is being replaced with let's see how far away I can shoot one , Another reason I didn't HPRs. It's now Deer Shooting not Deer Hunting !

And that's the great thing about Indiana. You can make it as hard or easy as you want. (Not that a 400 yard shot is easy). And as a fellow deer hunter if the practice is legal then it shouldn't be looked down upon. There's so many people against hunting. We should remember we are on the same team.

They have heard from me and will again !I ! Do what ever is legal ! I'm ok with it but I don't have to like it ! Seeing if you can hit something at long ranges is for the range wher a clang can be heard Not for live animals IMO

If i wasnt 100% certain I can make a good shot at that range I wouldnt even be talking about it.

400 yards isn't really long range, guys out west routinely make 400 yard shots.
