Shooting, not hunting I'd say. Personally have done quite a bit of shooting long distance with my 700 in 30/06. Longest shot I've ever made was 485 on an antelope. This year I figured take the 06 out and see what I could do on a whitetail. Didn't laser him but I reckon he was right around the 8 yard mark and that's probably stretching it.

Would you want to outlaw close shots? I don't care what weapon I have in my hands, I want closer rather than farther. For the games sake and for my track job. Closer=better.

Yesterday I could of used a long knife to take a buck. I had three bucks walk by me sitting on the bench in the woods at 3-4 feet. I could have stuck out my foot and tripped them. Tomorrow I will take a picture of the bench and the trail. They walk this trail or the lower trail 40 yards down the hill everytime.

40 yards....wasn't sure the 'ol 358 was capable but it did the job.
The new Hoyt killed one yote at 30 and gave another a haircut at under 20.

glad I don't hunt up north in the flatlands If I had a fear of being shot by another hunter with a HPR, I'd feel a lot safer on flat ground. At least they would be shooting at a downward angle or horizontal at most, putting the bullet in the dirt within 500 yards. Same scenario in hilly country, and a hunter could shoot uphill and put the bullet into the sky, where it could travel miles. For sure, I'd much rather be on flat ground with HPR's being shot around me.

The 7.62x39 rounds I'm using this year drop 90 inches at 500 yards.

30 yards - .243
my scope was only on 3x so almost like shooting smooth bore shotgun. plus it was only bore sighted the night before and you guys told me that was good for 25 yard shots. what's an extra 5 yards?😉

Shot a doe last week at 105 yards with a hollow point 7.62*39 round. Bullet came to rest in opposite front shoulder and she dropped twenty yards from impact. Would not take this shot with my improved cylinder slug barrel equipped 870. I was shooting from half way up a steep hillside bordering the cut corn field she was feeding in. The little 7.62 X 39 MM is a fine short range load for deer under 100 yards. I have a CZ-527 chambered in that caliber, but also at one time owned a Ruger M-77 MKII in 7.62 X 39 MM and shot 7 deer with it including a head shot on a Buck @ an even 100 yards. Never lost a deer using this caliber and it is ideal for a recoil shy or beginning deer hunter. I am guessing the brand of ammo you're using is WOLF BRAND 123 grain hollow point?? I used my reloads for deer and used Winchester older Silvertip bullet 150 grain for the .30-30 Win. with IMR-4198 powder (23.0 grains) in Winchester brand brass.

I was going to ask the same along with rifle type. I'm using what I call my Ak15 or AR47 if you like. Currently using remington soft points but only have 6 left so may be back to the wolf mc sp, as I can't find the remington again.

Not sure but I think Remington dropped the 7.62 X 39 MM from their line-up. Never cared for 7.62 Remington ammo anyway because they used a small primer.

I zeroed and understand trajectory on my .308 out to 300 yards, but have not had an opportunity to pull the trigger yet on a nice buck. 200+ yard shots where I hunt are a definite possibility. I've made them in the past with "Indiana legal" .375 whisper before rule changes.
