I've just about had it with this nightmare. I have 3 options : get a new rr and keep going at it, hang it on the wall or move on sell it and use the money towards something else.

I was shooting it until I just broke the end off the ram rod because it got stuck. It's out now but I'm highly upset. they make em everyday (this is why you get a nice fancy range rod) Yes but I would have to get one to use and the one that belongs with the gun just to have it.

I was looking for a post to give me an idea what gun you are shooting and this is the best I see. Probably a side lock percussion cap? If it is a modern type gun with inline ignition I might jump to the conclusion it is rifled for sabots. If it is a replica gun with percussion caps I'm pretty sure it's rifled for round balls, 1/60, or maxi balls 1/28. It's a rare gun that shoots something it's not designed for BETTER than what it IS designed for. What's most important is what YOUR gun is designed to shoot best. It hardly matters at all what I own or shoot. Or any one else pretty much. Yep on the ramrod post above this. My regular everyday shooting rod is fiberglass. I ground a notch in it where the springy holder thing hits it to make it extra darn sure it's going to slip out in the field. Marked it with a knife where my ideal load lands at the end of the barrel and drilled a hole in my ball starter to fit it for really shoving down a tight one. Your gun looks to me like a Thompson Center Hawken Rifle to me. 54 cal I think you said. Get you a good strong cheap replacement rod for shooting and a wood one for the wall if you want it. Grease up a double patch on the jag and run it up and down once. If it pretty much makes on revelution from the bottom to the top of the barrel it's probably 1/28, try maxi balls. Fill the lube rings with bore butter and push it in on a load of powder. The first two rings on those you should be able to push in the barrel with just a thumb. They are suppose to be smaller to get correct alignment with the bore. The top ring will be slightly bigger and harder to push in. It is engraving it to the rifling of the bore. You may need a ball starter for that. Then it should push all the way down with little/equal resistance. IF it feels tight then loose then tight, you have a problem. This will affect the accuracy. How bad, who knows. What happens is the rifling strips the bullet instead of twisting. You might reduce the load and get away with it for a few years depending on how much you shoot. Mine still sucked. I replaced the barrel. If the tight jag barely goes half way around in it's trip up the barrel, then you are probably 1/60 twist. Patch and round balls.

If that's you only problem you are a lucky man dude. Get another rod and move on. That's really a 6-700 dollar gun. It's just the me generation doesn't know what's good or you couldn't even find one of those guns.

Hell I shot my ramrod out of my gun on the range and NEVER did find it before. Tell me about a bad day.

From what I've read it is a 1-48 twist. designed for patched ball but conical works with a heavier load.

From what I've read it is a 1-48 twist. designed for patched ball but conical works with a heavier load. Wes, I have a TC Hawken; a good friend gave it to me. It is so cool to shoot and look at. Just think about the memories of harvesting a deer with that gun. It will be something that you'll never forget. I'm not much on proper nomenclature, but the rounds with the plastic sleeves slide right in without any lube. For a traditional hunt, you won't be able to use these, but I buy the conical lubed ones for these hunts. Cool that you found a formula for calculating the powder. That happens to be the load I found to work best in my gun. This is not the gun that I take into the woods; it too pretty, heavy and long. Again, you are welcome to try out any of my guns to see what you like, and if I'm not planning to use it, you are more than welcome to.

First things first I have to get a new ramrod now. then I'll try the conicals and see how they do.

I've never seen any "formulas" but a rule of thumb from the old times was double the caliber was a max load. Not always the best or most accurate but the max they would go.
My max is the most that will fit in the speed loaders with the lubed bullet. Funny thing is that's pretty close to double the caliber.
I've got molds for Maxi balls and REAL bullet for my 45.

Hey, with these new rule changes, does anyone have a Savage 220 they would want to sell? I'd like to have one for my Illinois hunting.
