This is my backup gun. You can't carry it into Starbucks or any other places where there might be ultra liberals around, they freak out.

I will probably not hunt with a rifle, I usually use my bow and muzzleloader. Sold the slug gun of 20 yrs ago. But I would like to take one with a rifle here in Indiana, I have several 308's but this is the one I would use.

Anyone own an American Rugar? If so what do you think I saw a Ruger American at our local Walmart. Looked rather CHEAP to me, and didn't like the Synthetic Stock at all. I'd wait and buy a Ruger Model 77 Hawkeye or their Compact Magnum rifle in .308, with a walnut stock, and a good quality Scope.

drs...I agree. If I'm gonna grab a synthetic stock rifle it will be a Savage with an accutrigger. To me best bang for your buck without having to do anything to them.

600 & a Leupold, that will work! Good eye there dbd, but not quite, this was one of Remington's version of the 600. Its a 673 guide rifle, the 6 is for characters of the 600, the 7 is for there 700 series rifle's and actions and the 3 is for 2003 when they were produced. They only made them 3 yrs tho, just didn't catch on I guess. In the process of hand lapping the barrel and working up some loads to see whats going to work.

Anyone own an American Rugar? If so what do you think Mine shoots good with some thrown-together 130 SP ammo that I was going to see if I could call in a coyote or two in the woods where we deer hunt. It is turning out 1/2" groups without any kind of load development whatsoever. Do wish I could stiffen up the forend some, but does not seem to be hurting it the way it is.

Email DNR gets clarification on new rifle law for deer hunting
Date & Time 4/5/2016 All Day
Description The Department of Natural Resources has received numerous questions regarding recent legislation that legalizes certain rifles for deer hunting beginning later this year. Most questions have to do with calibers and cartridges allowed under the new law.
House Enrolled Act 1231 that was passed earlier this year by the Indiana General Assembly allows some additional rifle cartridges to be used only on private land during the firearms season.
The new legal cartridges include, but are not limited to, the .243 Winchester, .30-30 Winchester, .300 AAC Blackout, and .30-06 Springfield. Additional requirements are:
• The rifle must have a barrel length of at least 16 inches • The rifle cartridges must have a cartridge case length of least 1.16 inches • The rifle cartridge must fire a bullet with a diameter that is o .243 inches (or 6 mm); or o .308 inches (or 7.62 mm) • No cartridges with a bullet diameter between .243 and .308 are legal (such as the .270 Winchester) • A hunter may not possess more than 10 such cartridges while in the field
Rifles with pistol cartridges that have been allowed in previous years may still be used to hunt deer on both private and public land.
Additional cartridges that are legal under HEA 1231 include, but are not limited to, the following:
• 6mm-06 • 6mm BR Remington • 6mm PPC • 6mm Remington • .240 Weatherby • .243 Winchester • .243 Winchester Super Short Magnum • .30 Carbine • .30 Herrett • .30 Remington AR • .30-06 Springfield • .30-30 Winchester • .30-40 Krag • .300 AAC Blackout (.300 Whisper) • .300 H&H Magnum • .300 Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum • .300 Savage • .300 Weatherby Magnum • .300 Winchester Magnum • .300 Winchester Short Magnum • .300 Remington Ultra Magnum • .308 Marlin • .308 Winchester • 7.62x39mm • 7.62x54mmR
There are other cartridges that meet the law’s specifications, and there are others that do not. A partial list of cartridges that are not allowed under HEA 1231 includes the .270 Winchester, .38-55 Winchester, .444 Marlin, and .45-70 Government.
HEA 1231 is scheduled to expire after the 2020 deer season, at which time the DNR will submit an impact report to the Governor and the General Assembly.

Not sure I understand the rationale behind the cartridge possession limit. Who cares how many you have on your person?

Yeah, I thought the bolt looked a little different but I just figured it was the camera angle. Forgot about those.

When you are sick, and up at all hours of the night because you can't sleep, you think about all sorts of stuff.
I'll bet the guys that make Indiana specific HPR's for deer hunting aren't happy. Their business just got pulled out from under them with one signature............

Not sure I understand the rationale behind the cartridge possession limit. Who cares how many you have on your person? That's something I don't quite understand either. Carrying an "X" number of rounds (by law) shouldn't even be considered. For the record, I normally carry eight rounds with me while Deer Hunting.

I bought one of Remington's Model 673 in .308, back in 2005, and briefly owned it. It shot very well but there were things about it that I didn't care about. I didn't care for the stock which seemed to be rather "boxy" and didn't like the type of scope bases where the rear base only had one screw to secure the base. Also the trigger seemed to have a heavy pull with some "creep". All-in-All, it was okay but certainly not as good as their Model 7 bolt action.

drs The stock does seem a little thick, I'm in the process of looking for a good synthetic. The trigger on this one is pretty crisp, I'm guessing around 5 lbs. I plan on doing some polishing and deburring on it. Ive set it aside now for later in the summer.

I'll have to order a 16" barrel for the 300 blackout... 6-6.5x47 Lapua should work nicely. Or the 6x45
