I have a 358 Hoosier, so I won't go to the trouble of getting my 30-06 back in service. If I did not have a suitable rifle, I certainly would buy one in one of the cartridges that will be specified. Would most likely opt for 308 Winchester (a Browning Model 81 wouldn't hurt my feeling any).

I voted NO, for now. I will be staying with my 358 Hoosier. It's turned out so much more accurate than I ever expected. Even if they don't allow the HPR's in the park draws I will have my PCR. Later when the political dust settles I might look for a smaller caliber that would still be good for deer and smaller critters as a back up.

Parson is that a Savage Axis by chance? No Axis. It's a 110 non-accu-trigger model that I bought about 25 years ago. Very accurate rifle.

By what i have read it ia comparable to a 308 in any case, and it has taken african game. in all respects apart from an over the counter name it is an hpr, lol you can save your money as it would be hard to improve on for what i consider deer ranges, that is if i have read correctly. Please correct me if i am wrong as i am only human, your goverment liscensing department are calling me an alien though, and they have never met me yet,lol regards Billy.

Mine is a bolt action, rebarreled a Savage Model 10. The 358 Hoosier essentially matches the 358 Winchester's performance. Published data list loads for 180 gr bullets up to 2700 fps. This is HPR performance in my opinion. I can vouch for its performance on deer as well. I've shot 3 through the ribs with mine and they've been "a couple hops and a flop" each time.

I have zero intent personally on using one...but it will give me an excuse to justify another gun purchase or two haha! Honestly, if they open up caliber wise my .257Roberts I have from a dear friend who died...may just have to go out and take something. Not a gun hunter personally, but that would be a special moment...

Pretty dumb the way that is currently written, only allowing a handful of chamberings. Would be smarter to have a min & max bore diameter, as well as a min & max case length.
If a .243 is good, and a .300 mag is good, what's wrong with; .257 Roberts, .270, .280, 7mm mag, .35 Rem, .338, etc., etc.?
I really hope this doesn't fly, but it sure sounds like it is going to.

I usually just hunt with my bow. But that being said if I still need meat during the late gun season I may pick up one of my rifles and go take a doe with it.

Nothing wrong with taking a deer with a 300 Win Mag, but your shoulder pays a price for that extra velocity! The Winchester .300 Magnum is a splendid cartridge, for hunting Elk or larger game. It's a bit "overkill" on Whitetails though. A Hunting friend of mine here in Ky, once shot a Doe one season with his .300 Win. Mag. several years ago, and the wound channel was huge. He shot it through the shoulders and destroyed them both, range was around 75 yards. As for recoil, your .300 Win. Mag. recoil is very manageable, just being a bit heavier than a .30-06. Dad hunted in Wi. with a 30-06. He swore off of using IIRC 150g Winchester Silvertip bullets after he shot a buck the exact same way your friend did, and the shoulder on the exit side was mostly gone. I have no idea how big the buck was, nor the distance, but he never used the Silvertips again.

greetings Lets be honest the 300 win mag is a big game rifle, it is going to destroy meat unless one loads it down and chooses bullets carefully. I do not own one but my friend does and we tried it on a roe, well it was not worth taking home, literally. He got it for long range target shooting and at that it excels.
Essup i once had some big silvrtips that were no good to me and i gave them to a friend who was going to Africa, when he got there they refused to allow him to use them they said they were too soft for there game and may blow up on entry. Your statement on dads experience seems to prove that view. regards Billy.

I'll likely be breaking out the Remington 770 (?) .243 to reach out and touch one!

I've been holding out purchasing a HPR, now have a great reason. So, hopefully yes soon, now undecided.

I just ordered one hundred 165-grain Hornady SST .308 bullets and one hundred pieces of brass. This is going to be fun. (giggles)

I don't see the point of going to an HPR, my shotgun works just fine.
