I am not meaning to throw personal attacks, I just have not heard one reason why youths should be restricted from harvesting buck deer during their hunt.
Other than of course that there is competition for those buck deer.
Every other type of deer hunt including archery, military, state parks, general gun and muzzleloader allows the taking of a buck deer......why shouldnt the youth season?
If we are holding the opportunity to harvest bucks untill everyone can take one, then we should not allow any buck be taken untill all weapons can be used (general gun season).
I don't beleive that ANYONE should be allowed to hunt under a youth tag unless they are a youth. If a youth is someone under the age of 16 then regular tags should be required for folks over the age of 16.
I have also never cared for the loophole that allows folks that are 17 to purchase a youth tag when they will turn 18 prior to the hunting season. As it stands now, your youth tag should expire on your 18th birthday.

Hey Woody maybe you need to pull out the reg. book, a youth hunter may take an antlered animal just like an adult, except those for those two days.
Not in any post of mine will you read that i oppose to the youths taking a buck on those two days. I just hope these youngsters won't sit and wait for a buck, cause thats what they see on TV. Nowhere on TV do they promote the shooting of does. Its always about the buck. If the DNR really wants the youngsters to have the possibility of seeing shooting a buck they need to move it to the weekend before the opening of firearm season. But since its early in the season the apparent reason for this two day hunt, is to get the youth involved "hands on" during the hunting season.

Tell me what two days that any other hunter group can not take an antlered deer. I'm saying treat the youths equally for every day that they are in the deer woods. We are on the same page on the hoping they don't wait on a buck, but I would not chastise a youth if they did, especially if they had already killed does in the past. I also agree on the youth hunt should be closer to the gun season. But, that will never happen.

PAV,
That is quite unfair as no where have you ever indicated that your personal feelings were the position of the IBA.
The only control I have on anyone is what they post here. Please do not allow one person to run you off.
You have a PM..

Woody,
I have deleted all my posts on this subject. I can't allow my personal opinions to be used as propaganda against the organization.
Nobody is running me off. I'll just save my future comments for less controversial subjects. That goes for the internet as a whole....not just this site.

As always, you presented your side very well and we all need to hear both sides of any subject. That is the only way that we can learn and reach an educated decison on what we want to support. Or maybe even a compromise, who knows....

I have a son who is about ready to start hunting and I would love it if he could shoot a buck, but more than likely I'll let him shoot the first thing that walks.

My 8 year old grandson will go on his first "real" deer hunt next year and I just hope he gets the chance to shoot one. My family and I are meat hunters first and formost and our hunting area is not "prime" so we take what ever happens along. If his first opportunity is a buck I hope he is legally allowed to take it.

Sounds like he got his HI Deer Contest prize. I hope that he puts it to good use. Tell him I said GOOD LUCK!
