A sad deal..More fuel for the anti-gun people..
Gunman kills 21 on Virginia Tech campus
By SUE LINDSEY, Associated Press Writer
BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people and wounding another 21 before he was killed, police said.
ADVERTISEMENT "Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university president Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."
The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.
One student was killed in a dorm and the others were killed in the classroom, Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.
After the shootings, all entrances to the campus were closed and classes canceled through Tuesday.
"There's just a lot of commotion. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on," said Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm where shooting took place.
Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the 4th floor of West Ambler Johnston dormitory, one floor above her room. Kanode's resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.
"They had us under lockdown," Kanode said. "They temporarily lifted the lockdown, the gunman shot again."
"We're all locked in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what's going on," Kanode said.
Madison Van Duyne, a student who was interviewed by telephone on CNN, said, "We are all in lockdown. Most of the students are sitting on the floors away from the windows just trying to be as safe as possible."
It was second time in less than a year that the campus was closed because of a shooting.
In August 2006, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy involved in the manhunt was killed on a trail just off campus.
The accused gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.

And no one there was allowed to defend themselves... I'm sure they touted their "safe campus" to parents and take pride in their police force defending students. Nobody but number one can take care of you in a situation like this, and on a college campus you aren't allowed to carry the tools for the job.

A sad deal..More fuel for the anti-gun people..
I understand what you`re saying-and I know you didn`t mean this the wrong way, but more than fuel for the anti`s, it`s the loss of innocent lives to a madman.
That`s the real shame.

I totally agree. More important than any gun rights battle going on is the fact that 21 innocent and unsuspecting people lost their lives because of this madman's decision to misuse a gun in that way. This is very tragic and hard to comprehend, even for me--I wholeheartedly hope that everyone involved (and especially the parents whose sons or daughters died in this attack as well as those now at great risk for developing PTSD as a result of seeing people shot and killed) gets the care they need in order to grieve and begin the healing process after losing so much.

What gets me is that he was carrying two 9mm pistols & the shootings were 2 hours apart on opposite ends of the campus.

If one of those students had their own 9mm pistol maybe many less would be dead or injured. But I'm sure this will stir things up. Very sad for the families involved.

Similar in my estimation to Columbine, lots of police standing outside watching while the murders are increasing on the inside. If there are any policemen on here, tell me why they don't go inside and look for the bad guy so they might at least have a chance to stop him. Seems like that happened in a similar manner several years ago at a McDonalds.' Horrific for the students, relatives, the college, and soon to be, all of us gun owners.

Just turned on CNN and listening to this developing story one thing is clear: Too early to understand what happened. As was said here: 21 young people with everything to live for are gone. 21 Families are dealing with something that is the worst thing that can happen. When my wife die her mother was beside herself. No Parent should survive a child was all she could say for awhile. I weep for the families, I weep for this Nation, I weep to God because I don't know what else to do when I am faced with something like this. The only thing I can do is Pray and try not to make knee jerk reactions to this event. There will be enough of that going on for a long while.
Yes I believe in the 2nd Amend. but right now is a time to come together as a Nation and as a People. The number is now up to 31 People Dead. I am sure that number will change. That is what the AP is reporting.

There are very few statements that are true no matter when or how they are said ....... "a parent should never outlive their child" is one of those statements.
Prayers are with those families.

33 dead including the shooter per cnn The Situation Room. They are also claiming the shooter has not yet been identified. Worst shooting in the history of our country. Expected to draw copy cats in the very near future. My Prayers go out to all those involved. The blame lies with the murdering scum himself. It will NOT be reported that way by many sources I am betting.

Don't get me wrong folks, I am not trying to sugar coat anything, but statements like; our society is falling apart, isn't exactly true. In fact .... America has probably never been a safer, healthier place to live and raise a family.
This is just the act of a crazed, nut, and that's all there is to it. Be thankful you don't reside in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa or some of those other third world regions. They've got 50 crazed nuts for every one in the US, and they live worse than some animals.
Prayers for the families are in order. Meanwhile, take care of your own families and friends and don't permit insane behavior in your own inner circle.

MSM are allready calling it the "worst mass murder in the history of the US"... I guess 911 doesn't count since whoever you think did it did that with big explosions and not dem ebil 9mm handguns... Meh. When guns are outlawed suicidal nutballs will start blowing themselves up. I'm still waiting for the first walk-in suicide bomber. A 20lb propane tank in a backpack full of loose scrap metal and that lecture hall would have had a heck of a lot more dead than 30... Unless you use WMDs (explosives/gas) the FIRST and ONLY thing a mass murder really needs is disarmed and compliant victims.
