Valpo teen clocked at 142 mph
Dec 12, 2006 06:16 PM EST
Valparaiso - A Valparaiso teenager charged with driving 142 miles per hour told police he was speeding home so his parents wouldn't be angry at him for being late, police said.
Porter County sheriff's deputies stopped 16-year-old Brandon Raap along a rural stretch of road Saturday after a radar gun clocked his Subaru going nearly 90 miles per hour faster than the posted 55.
Raap faces speeding and misdemeanor reckless driving charges and could have his license suspended.
A sheriff's spokesman said it might be the fastest speed ever recorded on Porter County's roads.
When I was 16 I could have never afforded a car that would go 70, let alone 142! But wait, he probably didn't buy his either. Ridiculous! They should take his license until he's 25.

Yes, I agree that loss of privileges and legal consequences are in order due to this kid's complete and total lack of sensible judgment...at the very least, he is not yet ready to have adult privileges such as independent use of the car if those are the decisions he is making while using the car independently!

I had 2 things @ 16 yrs. old keeping me from going that fast. 1. My old Chevy 1/2 ton pickup with a "3 on the tree". 2. A severe thrashing from the old man after spending a night in jail.

I heard about this, so I did a Google search to find the story and read more about it, and this story is all over the country; this kid is a national legend, for better or for worse.
I wish I had access to a car like that when I was 16, 2 - 3 year old, 140+ mph car! I coulda beat the little rich kid with the brand new Grand National!

In a straight line, but without some really good suspension (providing he can drive well) a wrx sti would smoke you in the twisties.

142 miles per hour? I don't know about that one. I think i'll agree with 870 and say, in a subaru?? How straight was the road he was on? I't have to be curveless for miles to reach that speed. How did the cops catch him, even in a police interceptor? I wonder, how many production cars in the US can go 142 miles per hour? Gearheads, enlighten me.

US 30 east of Valpo is flat as a pancake and near straight for mile after mile, he had plenty time to get that car wound up to hit that speed. Guilty as charged I had my hot rod motorcycle to 140 once or twice on that same stretch of road at that time of night. You could go for mile after mile and not see another vehicle late at night at times. He was in more danger of killing himself by hitting a deer that came out of one of those cornfields along that section of road than anything else.

My boss claims he had his wife's Toyota Avalon up to 158 a while back.... I think his wife was in the car with him at the time, so there's a witness.

The top speed on the standard WRX STI is 155 mph. Thats straight from the factory. It does a quarter mile in 13.2 seconds, 104 mph. This kid probably had modded the car some, so I'm guessing he had throttle left. But, you can't outrun a police radio. Slalom speed on that car from the factory is 69.1 miles an hour. It can take a curve.

He will probably get grounded for a week and then get his keys back. I'm afraid if I was the judge I would declare the kid and his parents a menace to society and he wouldn't get a driver's license again until he was 25.

Car and Driver magazine got 153 out of my car, but I've only got into the high 140s with mine because it really starts to lay down after 140, need lotsa road for 150+ which I don't have around here. Based on my research, I believe that kid's car was legit and certainly capable of the speed it was clocked at, and US 30 up there has stretches capable of supporting that speed.
In high school, 2 of my buddies with SERIOUS IRON got pulled over by an Indiana State Trooper while drag racing each other. Once stopped, the officer simply asked who won and who had the fastest car and let them both go. Engaged in Speed Contest is the same as a DUI with $2.5k/6 month, high risk car insurance in addition to the legal penalties and license suspensions, so they got very lucky.

But if I had as much $$$ into my car as the wrx sti costs, the wrx wouldnt have a chance in any speed contest. I guess ~$10k (including the price of the car) for 750hp isn't doing too bad. ;D
