After reading the "update," I fully agree! Well said, Woody! The parents are insane...

The top speed on the standard WRX STI is 155 mph. Thats straight from the factory. It does a quarter mile in 13.2 seconds, 104 mph. This kid probably had modded the car some, so I'm guessing he had throttle left. But, you can't outrun a police radio. Slalom speed on that car from the factory is 69.1 miles an hour. It can take a curve. I have to ask... what in the heck is wrong with a set of parents to give a 16 year old a speeding death trap like that? They are more nuts than he is... He will probably get grounded for a week and then get his keys back. I'm afraid if I was the judge I would declare the kid and his parents a menace to society and he wouldn't get a driver's license again until he was 25. Nothing is wrong with them. Their son made a mistake. My dad bought me my first car just after my 16th birthday. 1968 Chevelle SS. I built a 440" BBC for it with my own hands. Believe me it was capable of going much faster than any posted speed limit ...... On my 18th birthday my dad bought a new Corvette and let me take it out on its first night. Nothing was wrong with my dad.

I see your points Swilk, but I think we are dealing with a whole different mind set of teens from when you grew up. They don't seem to have much commomn sense. Probably from being babied so much. I certainly am NOT directing this at all teens. I know there are plenty of good ones out there.

I agree.
I am 32 years old.
When I was in grade school teachers were still allowed to paddle students.
My parents used "the belt" when I really got in trouble.
MY most feared words were "wait until your father gets home."
Im not letting the parents off the hook but there isnt necessarily anything wrong with them just because they gave their kid a "speeding death trap."
Last time I checked every car made was capable of going fast enough to get you killed. We had a 16 year old get killed in my home town about 12 or 13 years ago. His parents blamed themselves because he was killed going at a high rate of speed in the Camaro they bought him. What they just couldnt comprehend is the fact that accidents happen and even a Geo Metro will go fast enough to kill.

Call me old fashioned but I don't think parents should be buying their kid any kind of a car, especially a 150 mph one.
Same thing for those 160 mph crotch rockets.
The son did make a mistake, but you don't hand him the implement to do it with.
Purchasing him a high speed car is basically giving him ideas that it is OK to go high speed. I mean, what is a high speed car for? Why, to go high speed.
At 142 mph you are talking total disintegration if it wrecks.

I think even if a parent is financially capable of providing a car, they should at least let the kid THINK he's earning his car. Things are so much more appreciated, and cared for better if it is earned.

I guess you would have to define "high speed". 75 is pretty fast .... it is also the legal speed limit in some areas. 90 can be scary .... but every car for sale in America will go that fast. 30 is fast enough to kill you in an accident ...... but you would be cited for unsafe driving if you persisted in driving 30mph on our nations Interstate Highway system.
A parent buys their kid a Geo ... and that kid wraps it around a tree going 90. He is just as dead as the kid who wrecks the viper going 170.
Hammers dont make sore thumbs .... guns dont murder people .... and speed doesnt kill.

How many times as a teenager did we have that discussion of "How fast will your car go?" We weren't talking in the 1/4 mile. We were talking flat out, pedal to the metal, pegged speedometer.. If we topped 100 mph with a stock car back then it was doing something. Yes, we can get killed at 20 mph in the mall parking lot, but to hand the keys to a 150 mph car to a 16 year old kid is asking for trouble, 9 times out of 10....or maybe 99 times out of a 100. No offense meant to you or your dad swilk, but the law of probablilties sides with the kid pegging the speedometer pretty quickly, especially in this day and age. . .

Old money keeps getting older and older and more importantly bigger and bigger, and the kids keep getting more and more spoiled with each generation. Don't give them anything until at least after they earn their college degree. Shoot, wait until they're married! Better yet, wait until they are married and have their first child.

I would argue the biggest problem is the current license system. There are some 16 year olds who are mature enough to drive but not many.
If a 16 year old kid gets killed because he was going to fast you could make a good argument that he was to immature to understand the consequences of what he was doing.
If a 30 year old man gets killed because he was going to fast you cold just say he was an unlucky idiot.

Allowing a 16 year old to drive a vehicle that is capable of 142 MPH is akin to handing him a .416 Rigby as his first hunting weapon.

I knew before I ever got my license that I would loose it if I ever got a ticket... The night I got a ticket for 67 in a 45 (he clocked me at 72), I got home, put the ticket on the table with mom, and promptly threw my license to Dad... I still don't think that old POS Mazda B2000 would go that fast, but apparently it did...
However, how many of you can say you were allowed to drive (by yourself) 4 differnent vehicles on the day you got your license, one of which was pulling a trailer with a tractor and walk-behind mower?? ;D

Wank & Obrian from 97.1 HankFM called his house this morning. They tried to talk to him but he was getting ready to get on the school bus and his dad wouldn't let him come to the phone. I think they put the conversation up on their website.
