Finally scored my 2023 buck this evening. It took me a while as I was doing it pretty roughly with a pen, a notecard, a string, and a metal measuring tape. It's only the second time I've done it so yeah, still learning. Took me more than an hour and a half. I ended up using Boone and Crockett's online calculator to make calculations easier. I can't say enough about what a huge help it was! Buck ended up being my biggest by far at green score of 122" and net 115". Pretty average buck in most areas, including ours, but hey, I saw the antler height and got a little excited... And yes I do know what a big buck looks like. I've had two giant mainframe 12 pts near me while hunting. And that's not saying anything about the time I came face-to-face with a big 10 at 5 ft away and we both scared each other really bad. Got a very good idea of how big he was! I'm interested in the scores for fun, wanna try and beat my own best until I can't do that anymore. It's this buck. There's a 1 3/4" split tine on the left G3 that's not visible in this photo. And the little G4 on the right was just over an inch long, so just barely got by as a point. Little split tine. He's got the genetics to have been a big one. Here's the totals.

Looks alot like my first decent one in 99. I thought he was a giant I don't really care to find space on the wall but great memories of putting a slug in him at first light and finding hi in the creek. Pretty special. BTW that is a 24 year old mount from hoosier trapper supply. Congrats!

Good for you Astronankin! Score doesn’t much matter so long as you’re happy. 122 inches bigger than my buck this year.

It's much bigger than my last buck by more than 10 inches. I honestly thought at first he would just go a little more than 100". Nope. He has slightly more mass than I thought he did.
Gotta get him finished rotting and then cleaned up for the wall.

A lot of hunters don't realize what it takes to get a buck over 130 score. Age #1a and genetics #1b. A huge 8 pointer will seldom be over 180. Anything over 150 is a monster 8. Same for 10 pointer over 200 is very rare. To score over 200 it has to have genetics of 12 normal points or more, a 6 x 6.

My brother's 9 pt in 2022 was 147" net, and we were gaping at it! The giant non-typical mainframe 12 my dad and I saw in Tippecanoe County hunting near the Purdue airport about 9 years ago was obviously well over 200". And we know of big deer that have been taken there.

I've only "scored" 3 bucks that I have killed.
A ten point in 1978 that the County CO wanted me to enter in the HRB- 154" net.
A big 6 Pointer I killed in Illinois - 137 6/8" net
A ten point compound bow kill - 138 3/8" net
Nothing scored recently.. Just doesn't matter to me anymore..

If you look up the new potential Texas state youth record, that buck will give a pretty good idea of the one I saw back in 2015. The one I saw didn't have as much tine height but it did have more width. Color and mass were very similar to this Texas buck. I am not kidding, I've seen a deer of that caliber and had him within crossbow range. I still remember that beautiful clear sunny morning like it was yesterday. He also had two nice droptines.

www.northamericanwhitetail.com/editorial/joe-sumner-breaking-news-bucks2023/484028Saw this buck in person not long after it had been taken to the taxidermist in Marshfield, IN. I went there to drop my squirrel off and saw the rack drying. Came back a little more than a week later to pick up the squirrel and the deer was nearly ready for pick up. Deer was obviously going to smash the 200" mark. The pics don't do the rack justice period. It's huge. Massive.

A big 6 Pointer I killed in Illinois - 137 6/8" net Wow. Woody, that’s a big 6 Got any pics of him you’d share? No kidding! I'd love to see pic's of this deer. About 10 years ago we had a huge 6 point that frequented our property that we called "World Record 6". Of all the deer on my hit lists over the years he would've easily been in my top 5 all time that I wish I could've harvested. He ended up getting harvested about 3 miles away and I was told it scored in the mid 130's as well. I have lots of memories of that buck because he would frequently bed about 20 feet off the road just inside a fence on private property and I would see him about every other time I drove by. I never could get a good picture of him due to the nasty thicket he would bury himself in.

It is a good looking mount. I don't know why the small deer end up being some of the most attractive mounts. I've done all of mine (but one that I let sit too long) as Euros and they look cool despite the small size.

What do you think this guy would score? My 2022 buck and he's smaller than the 2023 buck, he's a 8 pt if you don't count the nearly 1 inch long protrusion on the antler to he left. I rough scored him late last summer.

Little tyke that walked way to close while I mid-morning hunted in our very productive ridge stand. Can't score him now (he got made into a set of rattles). But I'm guessing maybe 80" - low 90". Chocolate rack, unfortunately he bleached. My brother's 2021 nine point that was 157" gross and 147" net. Biggest buck any of my family has shot and successfully retrieved. Picture in the footbath tub makes the rack look bigger than it actually is but it's still a big deer. Two years later still waiting to get it back since taxidermist sent the hide to CA for tanning and the tannery got backed up. We've got a spot reserved for it on the wall!

A buck had already been taken on that hunting area by another hunter that year but my Dad manages the property so he has some power to make exceptions to the rules. Good thing he did.
