Everything was perfect weather wise this morning, 40 degrees low overcast skies with a light mist and calm North wind. NO BIRDS! One thing I have noticed this year is 0 Wood Ducks. Glendale back bays were full of them when I was squirrel hunting.

Some of the smaller lakes are freezing up. Brian scoped out a spot last night and came home early to hunt tonight.

This morning’s hunt was cut short by another group sitting up 50yards from him. He picked up and left. I’m taking his girlfriend to her stand before I go to mine in the morning. He is going duck hunting 🤨.

Slim pickings here on the shore of Lake monroe. Had a flight of geese come close. Only ducks have been a long ways off.
No action on stillwater either

Well we are on the board. What a SLOW opener for the season. Saturday we scratched out 3 Wood ducks and 2 more on Sunday. Seen very few this weekend. But still nice to get 3 generations out together.

The wife and I took a ride around the KANKAKEE game preserve to check things out. The front refuge had some ducks and there were a few in the air, not many birds visible. The TOTO refuge had about 100 Canada geese and a few ducks. I took a photo of the most current "harvest report" which was kind of sad. The club right next to the TOTO refuge was flooded but no bird to be seen.

An average of 1 duck per hunter.

My best duck spot is also my best deer place. Hunted deer twice there this weekend, checked the ponds on Sunday morning, not a single duck to be seen. Had plenty of teal last year, very few at all this year. On youth weekend there were a handful of woodies, maybe a half dozen mallards. Never even went opening weekend for adults, good thing, cause there are no birds.

I might add that these numbers also include youth and veterans hunts.

Fd, you listen to pod casts? I pick up meat eater a few times but today I found a recent one about ducks and the genetics of feral ducks.
His guest said new jersey has no wild based mallards and 2nd on the list is great lakes. Impact is linked to 20 year decline on mallards -2% each year. Kind of interesting.
But we don't need no fancy degree or title the reason is DUCKS HATE INDIANA!
