Woody, I....well, I should say my buddies....found a bunch of deer last year. I haven't gotten the exact spot out of them yet, but the general direction. OK... Do a little arm twisting . If that don't work try begging..

First off, It's good to see some familiar names.I was wondering where everyone went to.
I got drawed for the Dec 4th archey hunt at Muscatatuck.I am glad to see some people know something about it,because I sure don't.I was hoping to go to crane this year but didn't get drawed so this was my second choice.I hope to make it up there in a couple weeks or so to check it out.I have an extra hunt ticket for anyone who would like to go(send me an e-mail or something),my hunting buddy will be in crane that day.I am close to Bedford so it would about around an hours drive from here.Good Hunting,
Darin

Hi Darin...
You were one of the old ISM regulars that we were asking about and sent out a search party looking for you.
Glad that you finally found your way here.
Looking forward to your posts..
Dec. 4th is the second hunt and that should be a good one.

Let me know if anyone needs help or wants to meet up for some deer talk about that place. I live in Seymour and drive through there almost every week. I know a dandy spot that is a short walk in, tons of deer.

Saw 19 deer all together, no big bucks though just a 4 point and a little spike. I didn't know that they grew them that small in Muskatatuck!! I thought those deer were born with wallhanger racks on them. I would give up my entire Indiana deer hunting season to hunt the place with a bow during the peak of the rut. It has to be amazing what is moving around then. Woody, the 5th is my only day off. I work days the weekend before and nights Tue-Thurs. If I see anything I will let you know. I found the map that you let me borrow a couple of years ago hidden under the back seat of my truck the other day.

The lady who works in my room here at school brother in law owns land right across from the refuge. They killed 4 bucks out of there on Sat. Everyone of them they said swam across the river to his property.

Well, less than a week now!! Gonna shoot my bow a couple of days this week to make sure everthing is still where it was in October. I've watched a few swim the river in both directions. I've always wondered how much the pressure on the surrounding property pushes the deer to the refuge and how quick the pressure on the refuge pushes the deer back to the surrounding property. With all those bucks all ready killed, the remaining deer probably think it's the refuge by the time ml season rolls around and those hunters on the surrounding property are done and out of the woods. Especially this week when guys start showing up on the refuge to scout.

I drove by a field last night and shined my head lights in there while turning around and there were 30-40 deer in there. No big bucks.

hh, did you look over the map that was sent with your permit? Shoot me a pm and I'll see if I can help you. I am going to be there Monday, so I will not be home until late Monday night. I'd be happy to give you a call if you'd like and let you know what I saw.
There is usually a lot of water, so waiting until daylight to go in is not a bad idea. However, there are parts of the refuge that you can go into and not worry about water. Twice I have walked in before daylight, guessed which tree to put a stand in and saw shooter bucks. One of which was a 140"+ 8 pt that was a little lower than where my arrow ended up.
I don't know the water levels right now, but hope to find out before I head in. I have to cross a ditch that was 4" deep on day when I went in and about 2" below my rubber boots the next morning after a rainy night.

jcceadotcom, thanks for the offer. I all ready know the tree that I am going to be sitting in though. I've used it for the last three years. I think it may be more of a deer watching stand than a deer killing stand though.
Some of these guys that have never been may take you up on the offer though. I really appreciate it.
hh, another thing that I was told by a guy I run around with that has hunted it for years and usually 4 or 5 times each year.....if you see deer using a certain trail, get down and get to where you can shoot that trail. He has done this and gotten shots at nice bucks later in the day, but of course, he has also done this only to watch a big one walk under his previous setup. More times than not though, he told me that the later deer will use the same trail as the others.

Google map has color satellite imagry for free also. Plus you can turn on the roads feature over the satellite image to navigate more quickly.
