My old truck is wearing out its welcome. Was in excellent shape 3.5yrs ago, but the rust has accelerated like I have never seen before. Not just the body, but structurally. After this latest problem, I gave it a serious once over and now have a slew of other repairs needed to keep it going. Regardless, I have to fix it all to have a back up ride for now, and be safe before I sell it. Would make a cheap project or farm truck for somebody, but not for me as a dependable set of wheels anymore. Its holding me back from going on any longer fishing trips with our boat, etc.
Ok... so let's hear some input from newer truck owners. Will need to be a full size, 4x4, 1/2 ton will realistically be enough. I tow my tractor, trailer of firewood, and a 17ft Ranger boat. My current truck pulls everything fine, so gonna stay with half ton. Will be empty 80% of its life. I'm a Chevy man, love the 5.3, but like the Toyota Tundras with 5.7, except for their gas mileage, which is kind of important in todays times. No Dodges for me, and Ford is lower on list, but not out of the race. Just like to hear of some thoughts and experiences with maintenance and dependability. Thanks

I have no brand loyalty since I am not mechanically inclined. However, the favorite truck of my past was my Chevy Silverado. I know this is absolutely no help at all.
Happy shopping!

I have been a Ford/Chevy guy forever and I refuse to trade trucks until I am in the position you are. We had Dodge minivan I traded with less than 50k miles on it because it was absolutely a LEMON, no more Dodge for me. I have never owned a Toyota or Nissan, but most of my friends have and I have never heard a bad word about either. Now more than ever, price will play a huge role in my next truck.

I've had Chevys for 40+ years with a sprinkle of Fords. Like you I drove my 08 GMC until the rust (was built in Canada) made it unsafe and traded for a newer Chevy. Haven't had any issues. I'd not hesitate to go with Ford either. Damn things (used trucks) though, are like gold!

I like Chevy I’ve had good luck but I will say the new trucks are not built as tough and not even a truck anymore with everything they have on them

For trail riding, backroads, trapping vehicles I prefer the late 90’s Toyota Tacoma. Bought my 1st Chevy 2500hd two years ago and love it. Just use it as my dog training truck, has a 6hole dog topper mounted on it and hardly ever unhooked from my 10 hole dog trailer during the summer months. Running a dodge 1500 for a plow truck the last 8 years, just bought a older 03 ram 2500 for next winters plow truck/wood hauler.

Wife has a 2011 Toyota Highlander that we love. Hard to find many complaints about any Toyotas. I've read several guys online saying they have had trucks over 300k, and a couple at 5-600k mi with no serious complications. So realistically, any newer modern engine/trans/driveline seems to be pretty reliable. My problem is the chassis/frame. I've had many vehicles rust to an early death while the drivetrain is still good, as is current truck. Guess it's time to spend the coin on underbody washes in the winter. I have seen several Zeibart jobs fail, as even that peels off to screw you in the end.

I favor chevy but good luck finding a decent used truck for a good price. Been crazy out there.
1 thing the chevy's from maybe 2012 on have or had a known engine problem that can be fixed for good when it happens but it is a PITA. So I have been told. I can't recall what it was specifically but shouldn't be hard to find.

Yeah, prices are just plain retarded! I'm not in a hurry, like tomorrow, but sooner than later for sure. I am patient and methodical in searching.

I wouldn't even think of undercoating a vehicle if I didn't buy it new and take it directly to the undercoating place (on a dry day) from the dealer. Not new used, I'm talking being the first owner. Dad did that on his vehicles, and my Suburban was owned by a line worker at GM and after I bought it it dripped undercoating for almost 2 years. Not a bit of rust on it and it was a year old when I bought it.
I think he's looking for a crew cab too, trying to fit 3 in the front seat will be tight. He's getting smaller, but Luke is getting bigger LOL.

A 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton 4 x 4 extended cab will not come easy or cheep IDK it for a fact but that’s probably the most sought after truck on the road regardless of make tons of people buy them to pull the camper boat side x side snowmobile hunting most are decked out also with GPS back up camera Bluetooth heated seats you name it lots of guys own them in construction also for pulling trailers hauling the 4 wheel drive is handy if your working on new construction for not getting stuck in the mud and for plow trucks SUV is going to be way up on the list but that’s mom’s vehicle more times than not

I won't bore everyone with the list of trucks I've driven in the last 30 years, personal and company owned, I will say that I've had three F150's for well over 400k (combined) miles and don't recall a single repair expense.
On the other hand, the 2020 Duramax that I am driving has been a money pit since 120k. Fuel delivery and emission systems have both been problems. The entire DEF system was recently replaced and now there appears to be yet another fuel injection issue. It's going back to the dealer again next week. It's also had the calipers, rotors, and three sets of brake pads and still sound like a cat being strangled. I had a 2020 Chevy 3/4T gas before this one and the brakes squeaked on it also. With all that being said, I drove a 2015 Duramax for 175k and didn't spend a dime on repairs.

IMO, you are dead on....do your homework and get an idea of what you would like, get an idea of what folks are asking and then keep your eyes open when there is one worth the money. Good luck!

All stiff price tags as said! It makes me really sick and disgusted to see rusty frames and such on 2017-2020 already. That's criminal. That's one thing about the Tundras. I'm reading around 2014 they figured something out with their coating, and little to no rusting after that. The trucks are tough. Big frames, big rear end (10.5" ring gear) 4.30 ratio, big brakes, big towing capacity, good motor and trans, and their heavy at 5,700#. Over built for a half ton. Over priced for me, unless older or high miles. Downfall is gas mileage, 15 avg mpg at best, 8-10mpg when towing. Hoping to run into a private sale truck to get into a realistic price.

I'm using the finance calculators too, and 2020's are showing 8-9% interest rates. Lol. That's crazy. I bank with a credit union, and they always give a better rate than most. Even the loan on my 9yo Kubota last year was only 4%.
