Just how attached you can get to a dog. It is not a good day. I have an appointment to put down my lap dog of 17 years. She is failing bad and it is time but I am not excepting or handeling it well. I have no children so she is like my child. She will be missed greatly but she will be in a better place.

Truly a shame they don't live as long as we do so we don't have to say goodbye to so many. Condolences.

Hardest thing I had to do was have one put down.

That’s never easy. I’m glad we are able to be in a position to put them out of their pain and suffering. Sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully you can find a new one when the time is right.
I lost my baby girl instantly in my divorce. Every day she met me at the door and I had to drop everything and pick her up. Then one day she's gone and I've never seen her since. That was a hard way to lose a dog.

Years ago when my kids were young, they wanted a pet. In the past, they had a hamster and a white rat. Both were short term pets and when they asked for another pet we decided to get a cat.
We picked one out from the animal shelter and brought her home. From day one she wasn't the friendliest cat but she settled in. As time went by and the kids got older, they didn't spend nearly the time with her they had when we first got her. My wife and I kind of took the cat over and for some reason she seemed to like me the most, so she became "my" cat.
Now she is suffering from kidney disease. We've spent a fortune over the last 14 months trying to keep her around. We give her subcutaneous fluids every three days to help her along and she has to have special food. The vet said that we wouldn't be able to keep her for very long, but here it is 14 months later and the cat keeps hanging around.
Regardless of when it happens, losing her is going to be tough and I'm going to miss the heck out of her when she's gone.

Prayer.
If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle cannot be won. You will be sad, I understand; Don't let your grief then stay your hand For this day more than all the rest Your love for me must stand the test We've had so many happy years What is to come can hold no fears, You'd not want me to suffer so, The time has come please let me go. Take me where my need they'll tend And please stay with me until the end, Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time that you will see, The kindness that you did for me Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved. Please do not grieve, it must be you Who has this painful thing to do, We've been so close, we two, these years, Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

One of the hardest things we’ll ever do. But you’re doing the right thing to keep it from suffering. Thoughts & prayers to you.

In our 54 years of marriage we have had two dogs and 8 cats. We are on our last cat as we don’t want one if our animals to outlive us as we are not sure what would happen to them after we pass.
Kasey cat will be 18 in January. 3 1/2 years ago we thought we would be doing what you are doing, lovingly putting him down. He suffered from hyperthyroidism and histoplasmosis. He would not eat and lost a lot of weight. We had him on medicines but they didn’t seem to be working. Memorial Day weekend in 2018 we decided to put him down. That would be Tuesday after Memorial Day. On Memorial Day i dug his grave close to his old buddy, Grady’s grave.
Tuesday I got up early to love on him some. Much to my surprise he had eaten half his bowl of food! At 9 am I called his vet and she told me if he is eating he can kick it. Well he was and he did. A week later I was filling his empty grave. He has done well. He gets two thyroid pills a day. He does have done kidney problems but nothing serious, yet. Kidney problems seem to pop up on older cats.
He pretty well just eats, sleeps and makes poop. IOW , a typical cat.
There will come a day when we will have to say good bye and yes This old man will shed tears

I have had to put down 4 and each one just tore me apart. I make it a point to hold on to them until the vet says they are gone. I also bury all my dogs on my property and my wife paints them a nice memory field stone for a grave marker. You will see that dog again.

It's a horrible experience, but just know that you are doing what's best for your companion.
My S.I.L. has a geriatric (15+) designer mutt that is completely incoherent and incontinent. She is absolutely irrational when it comes to this dog. She has refused to stay at out house because my wife requested that the dog be crated when in the house. It should have been put down a long time ago.
We had a wonderful miniature Schnauzer. A perfect dog that knew no enemy or stranger. He went downhill fast after about 13. One weekday I told him that we were going to the vet Saturday so he could be in peace with no more pain or suffering. That night he left the yard for the first time ever and got killed on the county highway. Makes one think...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry to hear this. We have no kids and we treat our dogs as if they are. Our best friends. We get them going into knowing the pain we'll inevitably bare. But, we know that we're giving them a really good life. As I am sure you did.
Prayers for healing.

Buried 5 this year alone. Almost wants me to get out of running beagles. Last beagles about broke me. Never cried over a dog in my life. Cried like a baby. Had an appointment to take him in the next day. Told my wife the best he could give me was be gone in the morning. Woke up to him gone. He was the best hound I ever owned. Absolutely jump dog. Find a rabbit in Walmart parking lot. Just knew where to find them. Other dogs circled the brush pile and he'd dig into it. Dug him out of rabbit holes many times. Him and his daddy made me love hounds. His daddy died from dog fight.
It doesn't get easier it just fades over time. Thoughts are with you.
