Here in Northern Indiana in the "lake effect" area, I don't consider it to be a big snow until we get 12" or more. If a band of snow sits over you, you could see that in three hours, drive 20 miles and be in bluebird blue skies with no snow on the ground. www.weather.gov/safety/winter-lake-effect-snow

I can remember in 1998 getting HAMMERED by the snow and ice. I have a picture somewhere of the Suburban with probably 24" of snow on the roof. The girl that I was dating at the time lost power at her house, so I drove to Valparaiso to get her and she stayed at my place for around 4-5 days. She only had a car and worked in LaPorte. There was no driving around for about 4-5 days. I found an article about it. www.lowellpl.lib.in.us/icestorm.htm

So, I'm curious as to what constitutes a big snow storm in your particular area? I realize that can vary drastically, but I'm interested. Here 6-8" is no big deal, and it isn't considered a "lot" until it hits 12 or better. I'm no fan of snow, so when I go out and plow it's kinda like I'm getting to "kill" it, so there's some payback. I'd call 6 - 8" a pretty fair snow fall around here. I'd probably get the tractor out to plow that if it was going to stay cold for more than a week.

Weird weather here. Woke up to 13°F. Snow turned to sleet, which turned to freezing rain and then snow, and that swapped places a number of times today. It hit 38°F a little while ago and when I get up in the morning it is supposed to be 20°F.

Yesterday morning I plowed 3" of wet snow off our place, and got down to dirt in many places. When I went to bed there was 6" of powder on the ground. North wind howled at 30-40 all night, and when I got up this morning the whole front of our place was clear of snow. Only issues were a 2 ft drift along the garage doors, a 4 ft drift on the south side of the house, and a 3 ft drift along the back. Tomorrow I'll be shoveling drifts...with a 40 hp tractor.

I finished plowing today. I have the plow mounted on the bucket so I dont have to crane my neck plowing conventionally backwards. But, I took the plow off the helping hand before, so I used the box blade this time. It was digging in deep, so I removed the 4 heavyweight plates on it. I dont have much to plow, but I think I actually like using it more. I drag the snow and raise it just before I get where I want it. Then back up and push it where it goes.
Then I ended up putting the grapple back on so I could take logs off the trailer that esshup hooked us up with. Two logs had to be pulled off from the end. The loader didnt even budge when I tried to lift them. It has an 1100# lift capacity. It did clamp down and drag them off the end like butter tho. When on the ground, it pushed and manhandled them no problemo.
Kind of a work in progress learning what is best. So far, all the additions work good and happy with how everything turned out. Best thing 100% tho, no question, is the grapple. Worth its weight in gold...

Same here for the ice. I let the dogs out this morning and they slid down the steps. It looks like about 1/8" or a bit more ice.
I have yet to hear a car go down the street in front of the house and it's noon already.

Woke up to snow covered porches. The weather can't seem to make up its mind. Wish I was going rabbit hunting instead of going to work.

I wasn’t expecting the snow on the decks that’s for sure. 60 yesterday and around 30 today. Back to mid to upper 50s Sunday. Our typical weather here.

75 here Wednesday, 2" rain Thursday, 35 with 15mph winds Friday, 15 Saturday morning.
On track to be one of the warmest winters on record around here. Particularly interesting given that ALL of the long-range forecasts had us headed for the freezer and covered in snow.

Particularly interesting given that ALL of the long-range forecasts had us headed for the freezer and covered in snow. I just got done plowing snow, again. Dug out a neighbor who has 5-6ft drifts on the south side of his house. He said he's lived here many years, and has never seen anything like his winter. Neighbor on the back corner of us says the same thing. Supposed to get a bunch more snow Tuesday/Wednesday, so I guess I'll be out plowing again by Thursday.
