In light of the Pope and Young changes I thought it would be interesting to see how many of out members hunt with a crossbow vs. A vertical bow. I do not wish to start any debates over ethics or elitist vs good ol' boy or whatever the choices will be crossbow, vertical, or firearm only but if you hunt with a paticular type like a long bow or recurve or whatever I'd like to see that in the coments. Thank you and good luck this season!

Sorry about misspelling "What" in the poll but I hunt with a killer instinct crossbow. I got it on sale at Walmart a couple of years ago and have shot 2 deer with it.

From Woody's original post. huntingindiana.proboards.com/thread/68504/pope-young-changesBased on the above, I'd say not too much has changed (when it comes to xbows) based on the two quotes from above. As freedomhunter said I agree with that 100%. But for P&Y to basically tell half the bowhunters in this country that they will be "tolerated" but aren't "bowhunters" and will not be included by their club reeks of elitist BS and (IMO), will ultimately lead to the irrelevancy of their club for many bowhunters.

I truly doubt they make a special book for crossbows…. Probably just it’s own category/section in the current book like the HRR has done!

Would just like your input on what archery equipment you use or maybe you don't use any at all.

I hunt with a longbow and a crossbow. I sold my compound 4 or 5 years ago.
In the traditional archery world crossbows are highly disliked. I'm the only person that I know of who uses both. I get a lot of heat from my friends but they never turn down a crossbow killed backstrap steak at camp.

I honestly don't have enough time in my schedule to practice daily or even every other day with a vertical bow to feel comfortable using one. I have had so many hours of trigger time with a gun that the muscle memory will never disappear, and it only takes a little bit to fine tune it back in shape.
I believe that with today's compounds, the vertical bow is a better tool than a crossbow (longer range and quieter at close distances) but the crossbow will be good enough for me for now.
Now if the laws were different and would allow a modern vertical compound to be mechanically drawn, held and released, that would be the best of both worlds.

I hunt with both. Situation dictates the choice for that day. Although more recently is leaning toward the crossbow, due to lack of practice time. Between work, my apprenticeship, 3 kids, church, etc its hard for me to find much free time.

Strictly crossbow now.. I started using one n 2001 when both shoulders said NO MAS on shooting a compound.
In 2002 I started the crossbows for everyone campaign, but it took me to 2012 to get that passed. Total uphill battle, but I'm glad it worked out..

I have both and hunt with both. Last 2 years have been just vertical, but I probably didn't make it 15 times those years combined.

Vertical here. I hold zero qualms with crossbows, only those that feel they're equivalent in challenge to vertical...similar to how I have qualms with any fellow compound shooters that think their challenge is equal to traditional shooters. All hunters, enjoy it how you can - for someday you won't be able!

One observation is the massive age swing I'm seeing in crossbow hunting. When they first became legal for all it was still predominately guys with shoulder issues or those in the stage where strength was diminishing using it - aka the more seasoned hunters. Now however it seems their use is exploding into all age brackets and capabilities - a lot of that is due to what esshup outlined in how easy they are to obtain proficiency with.
Be interesting to have done the poll with age brackets for each answer

If it brings more hunters to party then it's a good thing. Seems common sense to me to have different record books for different weapons but in reality hunting records are a way to make money for those in charge of record book and hunter is paying to read their name in book. I have no issues with either. Debating on whether or not to get crossbow for grandkids or use firearms for their 1st youth season.

Not a fan of crossbows. Tried one out, killed a couple deer with it, kinda felt it was too easy, so gave it to my son in law. Also find them terribly heavy, awkward to tote around and carrying a cocked one really gives me the creeps.
