Since, I have only one shot and have peep sights on my .50 M/L; I like to keep my shots well within 50 yards.

100 yards, but I am sorry to say that the fly's are safe from me @ this yardage. T/C New Englander traditional w/ 3 x 9 - 32 Bushnell .54 cal. maxi-ball setting on 100 gr. of Pyrodex.

With fiber optic sights I'm good out to 75 yards , 100 with a scope . I shoot a Traditions Buck Hunter Pro in .54 , and a Traditions Lightning Mag in .50 caliber . Flies are safe from me too .

300 yds is my max but i wouldn't take that kind of a shot unless it was under ideal conditions. 200 yds or less is what im really comfortable shooting with a 245 grn bullet. i shoot the savage 10 ml.

I'm comforatble at 100 yards but 9 out of 10 times the deer is usually within 30 yards.

I would feel comfortable out to 200 yards. My Savage sighted 3 inches high at 100 yards is only 3 inches low at 200 with my load.

Well.....192 yards so far!  I shot two last year at over 150 yards to test out the performance of the Hornady SST bullets. I must say they worked great! Neither deer went over 50 yards. I use the 300 grain version with a T/C Omega with 100 grains of 777. |

Rick are you about 2 inches high at 100 yards? I bought my gun to shoot 200 yards, so thats what I want as well.

While I will not shoot a buck I cannot field score, my Savage 10-ml-II it will shoot point blank out to 225 yards with one load and easily 200 yards with several others... All of these loads will group 1" or better at 100 yards...

I am shooting 44 grains of VVN-110 with the 250 shockwave bullet in a MMP HP-12 sabot with a CCI m 209 primer. I had it out this weekend and my best group was right at one inch at 100 yards. I am estimating the velocity at around 2400 fps.

It wasn't a deer; it was an antelope @ 285 yards. Still 5 months or so to get him from the taxidermist.

TC .54 Hawken 105 yds on a 6-pointer broadside... 430gr TC maxi-ball through the shoulder knocked him right over...
I prefer 50-75 yard shots when I can...

I try to keep them close as I can....... 150 is stretching it. On the range It is a chip shot with a good rest but in the woods its a whole different ballgame. I still HUNT with a side lock although I own inlines and the kids shoot those, but where I hunt, it is rare that you can even get a clear shot that far out! I've been a competitive shooter since I was 12 and I have held 2 national records at one point ( whoopee!) My point is you got to use some common sense from time to time and know your limits. I pushed my limits with a bow this year and paid the price......... Spend time on the range and try and simulate "hunting conditions" when you can and then be realistic in the field...... 150 ,200, 250 yards?  / yea if your shootin off the back of a truck in a cut bean field! |

I also made a 120 yd shot in the prone position the same year as the 201 and a 100 yd shot off of sticks (all three last year). Every other shot has been 60 yds and under with my closest at 10 yds. I use a scope with a ballistic reticle and practice in field conditions 90% of the time I'm at the range. I only use a bench when I'm doing load work or shooting for groups. |

I just don't believe in using them except at close range when you have to take the shot now or the animal bolts. You try it at long range and your asking for a crippled animal. I prefer to use some sort of rest for long range shooting even if it's just my elbows on the ground. I just took a doe Monday and used my elbows on the stand rail for a rest. 85 yds.  You can see the entrance hole. It was a perfect broadside shot.  I would not have tried it without a rest. There's a hole but it's only about 6" or so. That's plenty for a good rest with magnification. |
