Holy cow 150 -200 yards and more...off hand in a hunting situation? How many who answered this have done it ? Closer is always better. Off-hand is determined by a personal comfort zone. How many people practice off-hand? There aren't many; so it should come as little surprise that lacking any practice, few of us are accomplished at it. There has been several kills past 150 yards, but most would not be considered true off-hand-- leaning against a tree, etc. There have been only two: one 202 yard off-hand muzzleloading shot at a mouflon that blew thorugh his heart. The other, was a 327 yard running shot on a moose. Not with a muzzleloader, with a .270. That too went through the heart. Certainly, though, closer is better.

Randy,
327 yds on a running target... 8"-12" drop at 300 with 150gr Super-X Powerpoint... what's TOF for 300 yards? Not a shot I'd probably attempt, but that's just me... :-)
Was that laser ranged...?

This is the only meter I got and your about to break it! Now to the rest of you who maybe new to the sport of hunting or shooting or perhaps just new to the internet let me give you a little insider info here. In order to post a factual story, one needs to be aware of the 3:1 conversion ratio. What the heck is that you ask? Well it goes kinda like this……. Say you shoot a fork horn @ 50 yards with a mild cross wind. Now even though your intentions are well when you make this statement for all the world to see a funny thing happens….. Your computer takes that info, converts it into some binary code sends to the server and it shoots it back to this or some other site and it will read as follows…… “ I JUST SHOT A 12 POINTER AT 150 YARDS in raging wind and hail storm!” THUS the reason one needs to keep the 3:1 in mind when posting….. This minor “glitch” has been in the system since the invention of the internet but rest assured, Al Gore is working on correcting this problem………….

If I had dumb luck killed one at that distance, because that is what it was, I sure wouldn't be on here talking to serious hunters about it.
I also wouldn't want impressionable kids to get the wrong idea that this was OK to do.

That is so funny and so true Gundude.......
I would have to agree. I would say 100-120 is max for me but that would be because of the woods I hunt is thick. I might try 150 in a field with a rest. I would much rather shoot 70 and in but when you don't get to hunt much and you have one at 100 yards and she's walking away and there is 30 min left to hunt. I'll take the shot if she is broadside. I also use a scope. I have shot open sights at 100 yards but never farther than that. I am fortunat to have an expert marksman as a dad. lol.... taught me a lot about shooting. Also learned alot with the fact that he wont take a shot that's more than 120 yards away. ( I am his kid so of course I think I am better than him and thats why the 150 for me)..... I don't want there to be any reason for not hitting the deer good and being able to find them when they are hit. Any body on here that can shoot farther that's great if you trust yourself for a clean hit. I for one just don't like to shoot that far. And for you young kids out there reading this I agree with pbr... some of these guy's here that have shot and shoot up to 250 yards away are grown men and have (I'm sure) been hunting for a very long time. Don't think you can do this just because they can. I would start with 70 yards and stick to that until you can move up. And move up slow. don't go 70 to 150 in one year. Just for example I've been using a muzzleloader for 15 years and 120 is as far as I will shoot confortably.

Shot my big boy this year at 125 yards offhand with a .50 cal T/C Omega with a 3x9 T/C scope. Used 250 grain Shockwave on top of 3 50 grain Triple 7's. First muzzelloader deer of my life. Would rather have used some sort of rest but was stalking him and it was the only shot I had.
