I like my Traditions Buck Hunter Pro .54 with either a patched roundball or 250 grain hollowpoint sabot over 100 grains of Pyrodex RS . This year it's Barnes Expanders for the sabots .

I own Thompson Center , Lyman , CVA and one custom muzzleloader . I guess the one that I use now for deer hunting ranks pretty high with me .
CVA Opitma 209 Magnum : 26" blue / Mossy Oak Stock 50 cal. , Tasco World Class 3 by 9
Favorite Load = 2- 50gr. pellets of Tripple Seven & 245gr Power Belt Hollow Point
I never paid alot of attention to CVA till they made this one . Its break action design is easy to prime and clean . I get less than 2" groups at 100 yds and slightly better with the 245gr. Powerbelt Aerotip bullets . I've got less than $250.00 in the whole thing.. including scope , mounts and sling . I bought it new in 2004 .

Well I like lead conicals and round balls I refuse to pay big bucks for bullets when I can cast my own. I have a round ball shooter in 54 cal with a green mountain barrel and since I am left handed a left hand lock I built this one so it is special to me. I have a 50 cal NEF Huntsman that is fun to shoot and it shoots conicals well. I will be working with my 54 cal underhammer in the next day or two at the range to see how it shoots for groups with lighter charge than I started with that was 80 grains of 777. Will start at 60 and see what that does then work up with 5 grain increments. This one is a fast twist barrel too and a green mountain one so it should shoot good. Jim

Hello Friends..
My favorite is a 50 cal. Knight Disc that has a camo stock and blued barrell. It has a 3-9 power Atec scope and it shoots 150 grain Pyrodex pellets and a Hornady 50 cal. Sabot with 44, 240 gr. JHP/XTP in fantastic groups at 100 yards.
I also have a 50 cal. Knight BK92 that has a black synthetic stock with a 3-9 power Simmons scope. It shoots the exact same load and bullet "right where you put the crosshairs."
I have confidence in BOTH weapoms and if I decide to change for any reason,.I have no doubts where it will shoot. I have taken over 50 deer with the BK92 and over 30 with the Disc...
GOOD HUNTING.. Bud

Not doubting you as I know it is possible but you must do a heck of a lot of hunting to kill that many deer with those two smokepoles. In how many years?? Twenty? or Less I figure the knights became popular in the mid 80's

My favorite MZ is a Savage Ml-ll. It has more drop at the shot kills than any other MZ I have hunted with.

My favorite MZ is a Savage Ml-ll. It has more drop at the shot kills than any other MZ I have hunted with. Is it the gun or the shooter , Schoolmaster ? Do you use a different bullet or set up with it other than powder ? I wouldn't think the kind of powder would make that much difference .

kevin1, I believe that the drop at shot kills are a combination of things. First of all, it has to do with the bullet a TC 250 grain Shock Wave. Second it has to do with the velocity about 2350 to 2400 fps. and third it has to do with bullet placement, any hit in or around the spine will do it as in a high shoulder shot or neck shot. A solid double lung hit will do it sometimes but not all the time. My savage has the accuracy to make the spine shot the rule not the exception. I have shot 3 inch 3 shot groups at 225 yards with this rifle and I feel it can do even better. My farthest shot was 121 yards last season and the high shoulder shot put it right down. Now I know the same type of hit with anything else would produce the same results however the accuracy of the savage gives me the confidence to take this shot.

Thanks for the answer , Schoolmaster , that's something that I've been wondering about since those things first came out . I had no idea that they could achieve velocities like that .

Ya know with the new T-7 pellets the black powder only rifles can shoot at higher velocities that approach or exceed the velocity of factory recommended loads in the savage. Technology and product developement keep pushing the limits of high performance higher and higher in the MZ and slug gun market.

My T/C Omega loves 2) 50 grain Pyrodex pellets propelling a 250 gr. T/C shock wave. Every deer I have shot has dropped! [shoulder shots] Groups 2" @ 100yds. And my OLD Knight Wolverine likes that same load also. It is also a tack driver.

Thanks for the welcome Woody.. Basically, the Whitworth bullet dates way back to the Civil War. It's an elongated bullet (conical) that Doc White designed his rifles around. Here's a pic of the bullets I use. The .504 caliber is on the left. It's 496gr. pure lead. The bullet on the right is a .451 caliber Lee,,weighing in at 425gr. Both bad medicine... ;D Here's a link to Doc's site, with a little history lesson, if you're interested. Scroll down about halfway, and Doc explains the Whitworth in detail. www.whitemuzzleloading.com/history_muzzleloading.htm

Yes, they do look like some of the stuff used in the Civil war don't they.
Thanks for the link.
The Whites are very nice MZ rifles.
