Anyone run a spring beaver line? My old trapping partner called, asked if we could do another run for the sake of it. Time to get all my gear ready, I should still have 75 330's and about the same number of 5 bridgers. Glad I froze a couple pounds of castors, going to start grinding castor and collecting oil this week. We set a goal of 200 for a 3 week run, very doable if water levels cooperate.

Rivers are starting to open, Brian and I set 3 traps this morning. Will get more out in the next week as temps start opening more water up. This will be Brians spring line while I trap with my old partner.

A friend of a friend snapped a 330 behind the ears of one that measured 48" from nose to tip of the tail, and it weighed 70 pounds. He was amazed at the size of it, he usually gets them in the 40# range. His private pond, nuisance trapping.
I caught ONE years ago that same size, same trap and it didn't move the trap it died so fast.

Only get the really big ones here if you get way back into ponds that are hard to get to. To many trappers here for a beaver to get old. Most spring beaver here are 2 year olds that have been kicked out and are looking for a home. Most in the 35-40lb range.

So what is the value of a beaver these days? Not much!! Buyer said he will call me next friday with a number. Most buyers have their shipments stalled because of the covid. My buyer has 80lbs of castor stuck in canada that he had sold for $87 per lb. Still has all his fur from this last season minus coyote and rats.

How many dam beavers are there in your neck of the woods.
I haven't seen that many beavers in my whole life.

I would hate to carry a 1/2 dozen or so through the woods and marshes.

That’s got to be a full time job just skinning, fleshing, and stretching the hides!

That’s got to be a full time job just skinning, fleshing, and stretching the hides! As reluctant as they are to give up their hide, I agree. It's not a simple matter of pulling them over a wire or wood stretcher, they have to be tacked out round on plywood.

Most years buyer comes to my house and picks up in the round. Only $8 offer today so we are skinning them all, Brian skinned all day. Castor was selling in Jan for $80lb, covid has the buyers scared to buy because they dont know how long they will have to hold them before exporting. We will just wait it out and freeze them.

I would hate to carry a 1/2 dozen or so through the woods and marshes. Thats the beauty of spring beaver trapping, 2 year olds are on the move so we trap every peace of water that touches the road rite away. In the summer removing nuisance beaver for the county and townships is hard miserable work, heat, ticks, mosquitoes, mud,,,,and mosquitoes!!!
