Tankless water heater froze and burst yesterday. I guess -20°F air blowing over the heat exchanger while not having the gas on heating the water did it. Spent about 6 hours drying drill bits, taps, dies, counterbores, etc., etc. It sprayed water all over the cutting tools/packages of drill bits I was storing. Bought the stuff from a mfg that went out of business.
Today I'll put it all back (think I saved them all) and work on getting the heat exchanger out of the water heater. and then to a radiator shop tomorrow to see if they cna repair it. If not, I'll order a new one. hate like heck to spend a grand on a new tankless if I can fix the old one (which isn't that old).
genesis, I'd get all the neighbors together and call the power company. I've heard of that happening and the power company footed the bill for the burned up appliances and equipment.

Question: do you have a transfer switch with a surge protector that you plug your generator into?

You should unless you have a high dollar generator you can get dirty power and that can wipe out electronics in a heartbeat

I’d say they blew a transformer them selfs and sent high voltage down the lines

Sounds like you all had a tough couple of days, good luck and hope things get back to normal for you soon.

Worked outside in this crap for total of 6 hours Wed night, starting trucks and reefer trailers. Twas a wee bit cold. Hmmmph...... I guess I never knew reefer trailers had heaters. :-) Yep, the freon actually reverses flow to work backwards. The condensor and evaporator switch functions, and heat is made inside the box to warm up the space.

Been keeping the fireplace insert going full blast last couple of days. Heater hasn’t kicked on yet. House is at 75-78. My other place has propane heating system, I keep it on 45 when I’m gone.

I made a quick connect for my generator. It has a breaker on one end and a plug on the other. I turn all my breakers off in the house including the main. Once I get hooked up outside I turn the main on in the house and then the breaker for my deep well and the furnace. Never had any issues in the past with this set up. My generator just wasn't working. I didn't have any issues until the power came back on.

Our power grid has many issues and yes, our energy (power) fluctuate greatly. Here is a bit. www.foxnews.com/world/mystery-power-outages-to-cars-and-key-fobs-in-canadian-co-op-parking-lot-stump-electricians-localsThis might seem strange, but we don't understand what electricity is. Very low power we know how to control it, but what is electricity? Cold and hot weather effects all powers of electricity. We see strange energy fields when 765K lines arc in cold weather tests. My guess this cold weather is causing line to line field arcs in the 765k lines. Very cold air almost turns into a vacuum like air (nothing moving). This may be causing very large build up and spikes crossing the states/countries. When I was in college (EE) we studied the theories and possibilities a long time ago. Today, we still don't know. PS: Circuit breakers are useless devices in stopping our equipment from frying. It's there to prevent a fire. Note: Fuses are a lot better in protection of equipment and prevention of a fire. So our houses CB's are garbage devices.

I’d say they blew a transformer them selfs and sent high voltage down the lines One of his neighbors could have had a generator or transfer switch malfunction also when the utility came back on also.

This is the hamroast from a deer I talked about cooking. 6 1/2 hrs at 250. Just a little salt and heavy pepper. I snitched a bite and oh boy is it good and tender. I may take and render the broth down for a gravy. Not sure yet. Onebentarrow
