Ive been toying around with the idea of buying a camera .... problem is I dont know a lot about them. Been looking and something like the Nikon D3400 seems interesting but then again ... i just dont know. Anyone have any tips or recommendations?
I would use it for wildlife photography as well as typical family things.

I video 100% of my adventures with the hounds. Really enjoy that more than shooting, kind of like killing the same hare over and over...hahaha. My camera of choice is a HDR XR550 Sony Handycam, it is a old camera but as far as Im concerned the best Handycam Sony ever put out. I have videoed a few bear hunts over bait and with dogs, and a handful of deer hunts. I had a friend come from Canada and his daughter took still pictures, had rapid fire, sounded like a machine gun going off.

A couple neat fast action shots she got. I will find out what her camera is.

Yes, I love taking the camera out with me. It adds a whole other aspect to the hunt that I enjoy. You don't need a high-dollar camera, but a nice zoom lens will be your best friend. There are a ton of YouTube videos that will teach you the basics of photography and how to use the camera, but you can post questions here or PM if you want. These are from this year...

Here is my highlight clip, very hard to get the hare and dogs to jump over the camera, film yourself shooting a hare, or get the ultimate sight chase on video. Usually fast action and hard to predict where the hare will pop out. Some days I get a certain clip and I'll yank the dogs up early so I can get home and watch the clip...LOL www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI5JyPeeUKQ

What rig you use? This year has been all about getting use to taking the Canon G20 and arms and everything to film hunts....I know I eventually would love to take my Rebel T3i with me for not only stills but B-roll as well. I've also thought about a really nice non-dslr that is smaller and easier to pack for still shots and such than my DSLR>

I, at this time, have no interest in filming while I hunt, more for the times of year when I no longer am personally hunting. This past Saturday morning for instance .... I went and sat for 4 hours and didnt have a gun or a bow with me. Just to watch.
Things I *think I want....a good tripod. Large range of adjustment on ISO. Full HD. A good tripod. At least two lenses.

I'm using a Canon SL1 with a "kit" zoom lens. I also have a Sigma-brand wide angle lens. I bought the SL1 because it is the smallest/lightest DSLR available. I will upgrade my zoom lens eventually. If I were to take 2 lenses with me. It would be my zoom and a wide angle. Get a zoom lens with the largest aperture (smallest f/) that you can afford. The wide angle lenses are great for landscape/scenery pictures.

A slight deviation from the point of the thread. I have more pictures of deer taken on my phone than I have harvested this season. As in zero harvested and six pictures taken. Been really thinking about the same thing as swilk. Pretty coincidental.

Having a good camera (and knowing how to use it) really enhances your after-the-hunt pictures, as well. They just take better pictures, period.

Not too mention they assist you after you've cleaned the animal up, propped them for presentation and then can capture good high quality harvest photos to share, or keep but good solid respectful ones!

If you watch Ebay, you can find some awesome deals on older DSLR cameras. I have a Canon EOS Rebel with 35mm lens, and a Zoom Lens or the Nikon equivalent. I think mine is like 8meg a pixels. Another option is, if you have a spotting scope is to buy an iPhone attachment for it. The attachment makes you able to use the iPhone camera and the spotting scope as the lens. Either Iscope or Phone Skope makes them.

I'm amazed at the quality of photography you can get from a simple iphone. I pass up a lot of bucks and have gotten some great short video clips.

Oh for sure, within 50 yards or so phone's today are incredible at them. Where they fail and do so fast is zooming in. After searching some Ebay and even used Amazon listings I may grab a Powershot or non-detachable lens cam to throw in my pocket when I don't want to drag my DSLR around with me.

Nikon is $400 off their D3400 right now so I think I'll order one and see how I like it.
D3400 camera body, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6G lens, 70-300 f/4.5-6.3G lens and carry bag.
I'll get a good tripod and a few SD cards from Amazon.

That 70-300 will get you going but will only give you a taste of what's possible! Be prepared to start looking at higher-end down the line!

It'll be okay to learn with.
I've got the camera on its way and also ordered a tripod, 64G SD cards and an aluminum SD card wallet.
