My 16' by 14' wood deck is 15 years old. It has been "stained" twice in its lifetime and now it is is need of some serious attention. I started with a power washer and then combined that with a scraper and wire brush. Then I went to a cleaner/stripper and that made more of a mess than I thought it was worth. My initial thought was to use one of the high dollar heavy duty coatings once I get the deck "clean." So, now I have stopped because I'm thinking...I really don't know what I'm looking for as an end result with this project. I know the old stain and finish needs to be removed. But, I haven't decided what I really want to do with the deck once prepped. This is a quick shot of the current condition: Anybody here have any ideas, expertise, suggestions?

We have a covered porch on the north and east sides of the house of unknown age. We just paint it every 3 to 4 years. The wood is too far gone to have a good stain and I am too cheap to replace the boards.

My daughter used Behr Deckover on her's and it looks terrible.
I used Wolman DuraStain One Coat Semi-Transparent Stain in sea Shore gray sold by Menards on mine and it looks pretty good.
It says 6 years on decks and 8 years on fences. I redo it about every 4 or 5 years..

We used Rocksolid. Now it isn't cheap and it is gray but it is tough.

I just finished my deck a few weeks ago and used Kilz Over Armor. It turned out pretty good and feels in cracks up to 1/4 inch.

And now I've read a ton of very poor reviews! Take my word for it - Her deck is flat ugly and rough as a cob. I see the commercials where people (actors) are dancing bare footed on it. Tough soles on their feet! They used the Behr Deckover a couple years ago and it is already chipping off. Now they are planning on building a new deck and their deck is only about 8 years old. They would never get the old Behr Deckover chipped completely off.. My deck is 31 years old, although I did replace the decking boards once about ten years ago.

So after reading a number of these reviews and watching the videos I don't think I will go with any of these heavy deck coatings. I'm pretty surprised there are such poor results and so many bad experiences.

A good stain can be applied right over another stain.

I've been maintaining my decks for 20+ years now. At home I've always used a real good tinted stain designed for such. We reseal every 2-3 years max and it has held up well. We spray it on then brush it in.
My deck at the cottage looks about like your picture. Once you go with a solid color, you have to stay with solid colors or the paint chips, etc. will show thru a clear or tinted stain. I've tried a couple different products designed for decks and have not been too impressed. Getting ready to re-do this deck again in a grey color, and think I'm just going to apply grey latex paint and see how it holds up. It's cheaper than the specialty deck stains and they only last a year or two anyway, so why not.
Regarding that deck restore thick stuff with the sand in it, my brother had similar results as Woody. It was chipping off within one year. It's also darned expensive and a gallon doesn't go far.

My daughters deck... What she has to say about it... "We're getting ready to try and scrub it off, power wash.. Ken read that if you poor boiling water on it , it will lift more and easier to power wash off. Biggest mistake ever!! "

My last house had a deck and I used Flood products on it. They soak in, instead of sitting on top of the surface and held up well. I usually recoated every couple of years.
FWIW, your deck is in tough shape, the boards are cracked and getting that coating off well enough to keep any other coating from lifting is going to be rough.
If it were mine, I'd replace the boards and start all over...
