I figure I'll work on some boards and then make a decision on the route I go depending on the condition of the wood.

Well after spending a good part of the summer sanding the deck as I had a chance, I finished that part of the project this past week. I decided that I wouldn't stress myself over the work and make it something I could enjoy, taking my time. My wife ordered a DeWalt random orbital sander and it worked like a charm, starting with some 40 grit! It really did turn out to be a fun deal...just taking my time...not my usual strategy! So, this weekend, I took to staining the deck. Yeah, some boards a bit weather cracked but I decided to go for it and I'll see how the deck weathers: So based on Woody's and a few other wise old sage's recommendations, I took advantage of Menard's 11% rebate and went with the Wolman DuraStain One Coat. I chose the solid color stain in chestnut brown. I was very impressed with the coverage and the ease at which it rolled and brushed on. Most paints and stains are way overrated on coverage statements. I put the first coat on as thick as possible without puddling or dripping and I would say it came out right at the 250 square foot coverage as stated on the can!

Looking good. I used a semi-transparent and am happy with it. I redo it about every 3-4 years..

I'm with Woody, I'm not a fan of solid stains, but in an older deck I can see why you'd go that route. Anybody else try Penofin Oil based stain? I did a large porch this year and I am doing my floating pier later on this month with it. I did part of the pier last year with a water based exterior stain, it seems that none of the stains that are sold here in Indiana are oil based, and there are no exterior stains available that don't have sealer in them, so no 2nd coat options. The stain that I used last year with the sealer is peeling already, one year later. I used Yosemite color. www.penofin.com/wood-stains/pressure-treated-wood-stainI asked them why the different stains - for treated and non-treated wood and they said the treated stains were color formulated to minimize the green tones in the treated wood that is being sold today.
