Drs, I total agree it's not for everybody. However I have tried the muzzleloaders including a double barrel 12 ga. ball and cap, and a flintlock. I have even tried the double barrel 12ga. with patched round balls (they do not shoot very well). I LOVE a challenge and the Airguns is my next tool. It's not for everybody just a few strange people like me.

I know the old English big game double barrels must use a certain load, otherwise the bullets will "cross" and each barrel will shoot to a different P.O.I. Hunting Squirrels or small game with an air rifle is a lot of fun. When I lived in Evansville, I knew one Squirrel Hunter that used one for all his Squirrel hunting.

They do not pattern at all. Fun to shoot but not capable of hunting with a round ball, great gun with shot in it for birds and squirrels. I am planning on going squirrel hunting with my airrifle this fall, head shots only. I just hope Indiana will in the near future permit us to use them for turkeys. I have a lot of education to do with NRC.

Woody, there is NO doubt the air rifles are capable of harvesting turkeys with below minimum crippling loss. It just boils down to public input and the NRC that day. I would hope other hunters would go to the DNR website and put a suggestion to permit air rifles for turkey hunting. Here is the link: www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/7373.htm

The one I really want to try out on a Tom is my 22 Hornet handgun......... biggrin2 That would be interesting! I believe some state allow the use of such firearms (pistols & rifles) for Turkey. I think Texas is one State that allows this use.

Sure, would be challenging. They even have air gun pistols either in CPC or CO2 that could be interesting to shoot and to do ballistics on to see it they were capable.

Greetings Over here our air rifles are max of 12ftlb. There is two .177 weirauchs in the house one mine one Alexander's any small game up to a rabbit and yes,a goose is dead if it's within forty yards and a head shot. Any air rifle above that energy has to go on a firearms certificate so unless one has a specific need for an air rifle like that one may as well go for a rimfire. Springers do need practice and they do need different scopes, Why. Because they recoil backwards if you know what I mean. They can wreck very top quality scopes. Be a bigger challenge a turkey with a self bow and a head chopper off arrow. Lol I could kill a turkey with an air rifle but a head chopper off self bow I'm gonna struggle. Lol Regards Billy.

Just to add pre charged air rifles put what scope you like on It's the piston in the Springer that wrecks the scope Billy

Billy, Weihraugh air rifles are best springer on the market, I would love to have a HW97K22. It's hard to,believe that these air rifles can shoot better than some 22 rimfire rifles between 10 - 30 yards. Absolutely these air rifles can cleanly put a wild turkey in the freezer, I am very confident about that. I would like to spend some range time with a turkey biologist with some turkey necks and heads to do a indepth study on the effects of .117 - .25 caliber pellets. Also to do some education with them on air rifles and how they could be another tool in the field for turkeys.
Where is over here?

Greetings Over here is the uk Right on the border of Scotland and England. Years ago I took my twin lads out with there .177 rifles. Thirteen head shot bunnies in an hour and a half and I stopped them. Did not want them killing for killing sake. We had those rabbits in the freezer. Lol I have no doubt at all that a turkey will fall to a .177 in the head so will most things at short range. Problem is what if folks start body shooting them, and they will.. ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?. Billy, I had thought you were across the pond. HA I have enjoyed reading and seeing the videos from Europe about shooting and hunting with air rifles. I can see air guns starting to develop a following here in the USA. I just wish we here in the USA had more air gun competitions like bench, field target etc... looks like a lot of fun.
We have a lot of education to do with each of the Game Departments to develop a working relationship to advance the air rifles in hunting, it will take time.
Body shots will happen NO matter the tool being used my inexperience hunters, that why it so important as fellow hunters to teach the beginners or inexperience hunters the proper and ethical ways to hunt.

With the advancement in airguns over the last few years is it time to have airguns to hunt turkeys in Indiana? With a growing list of states permitting hunters to hunt with airguns for deer and turkeys can we be included in that list? No.

Thanks jackryan for your comment.
I personally believe it's time to let air guns in Indiana. They are great tools capable of cleanly putting a turkey into the freezer. I do understand it's not for everybody but for a few sportsmen and sportswoman it would create another challenging opportunity. Happy hunting.
