I was in Southern Indiana over the weekend and came across what I believe to be three wolves. I've dealt with many coyotes, and these were very large dogs, especially the dark one. It was about the size if not bigger than a german shepherd. They were not in a fenced in area and were in a very remote part after a heavy snow fall so the back road had not seen much traffic. Does anyone think these could be? Or have any other accounts of wolf sightings in Indiana. I've got pictures but am new to the site and can't figure out because they are too big for the attachment regulation. Thanks

Upload the photos to a Photobucket account and then paste the tag into your post.

Blowing them up it sure doesn't look like a German Shepard coloration...
I know I would not want to run into them in the woods with just my crossbow in hand...

Yes, please blow up the pictures to get a better look. I could not think of what these would be except for a wolf. I'm very skeptical to say that because i know they are not native, but they look extremely similar.

They sure do look "Wolf Like" to me but they could be domesticated dogs that are out running in a pack. They look like a husky as well. I still would not want to run into them if I was out in the woods by myself. But I feel safer these days carrying a semi automatic AR15 vs packing the bolt action Remington 222. What ever they are they sure have a nice fur coat to look at.

The only other "dogs" I can think of could be Huskies or Malamutes?

wolfs? sure looks like it. I read an articale about 2 yrs ago about a wolf found dead in middle IN that was identified from wisconsin by its ear tag. it had traveled 600+ air miles from where ir had been taged. are they wolfs could be.your guess is as good as mine.wouldn't want to find out the hard way.
are they protected in IN or could you shoot one

Woody, if it would help I could email you them. I'm not too good with the photobucket. And onebentarrow, I believe they are protected anywhere, but I don't think punishment is as harsh and authorities are more lenient due to the fact they are not a native which could cause them to be mistaken for a large coyote.

I don't know what's in the picture, but it's only a matter of time until they are everywhere. Unfortunately the government thought it was a good idea to release them and the wolfaboos are out in full force trying to protect them.

Huskeys are just as or more dangerous than wolves. One took out my youngest son's pet goat when we lived in Whitley county. He did it simply to kill, he wasn't hungry. His owner put him down after I went screaming to her house. It was winter and the blood was horrible. I will not hesitate to shoot one if they get in with my livestock. But I blame irresponsible owners for not training these dogs.

I spend A LOT of time coyote hunting and that does not look like any coyote I have run into yet. Seen some big makes but those are suspicious

Would be interesting to know if anybody in the area kept huskies or wolf-dogs.
We had a 1/4 wolf, 3/4 German Shepherd when I was a kid. She was gentle as could be, but man did she look mean.
I used to work with a guy who had a 50/50 wolf and dog mix, not sure what kind of dog, but it looked just like a wolf to me. Not very good natured.
Having said that, there are wolves in the state, they turn up dead here and there sometimes. This would be the first time I heard of a pack though.

It might be a wolf or it could be a coydog. There is one on the north side of Indianapolis. He is bigger than a coyote with the same marking but the head and hair are different. I have seen 2 in the Sheridan area that are black. Same body and howl as a coyote. Sometimes the female coyotes mate with dogs and this is what you get.

It is possible it could be Wolves.
Michigan has a growing population of Wolves. Several Wolves have also been confirmed in the past few years in nearby Illinois.
So it is very possible for a few wolves to wander into Indiana from a local state such as Michigan.

Here are 2 of yours enlarged and one of my old ones of a big Indiana Yote. Wolves have blunter noses and rounder ears and Yotes have that cross on their back. What do you think? Sorry Photobucket reduced the size to fit. I think coyote.
