We are back at it this morning. My daughter and I are set up overlooks a high traffic area between bedding and water. So far this morning, there have been 9 different shots in the area. I think it's gonna be a good morning. Good luck and straight shooting!

So I got a buck last Sunday and havn't been able to post the story because my internet was down. A good hunt last week! So its 12 degrees last Sunday morning and I'm sitting in the stand tired from being up with friends the previous night. Its not that cold really, as there was very little wind. It's about 9:40 and I've been in the stand since about 6:15 and its been DEAD QUIET. Not a thing moving. So I'm almost dozing off when there is a terrific boom from across the field as my friend Stuart lets one fly from his stand about 300 yards away....then silence. Ya know....shotguns are loud when pointed in your direction! So I'm awake now and looking for whatever he shot at. 10 minutes go by and all is quiet. Then, like a ghost out of the night, this buck appears in the woods only about 50 yards from me coming from the general direction of Stuart's stand. Sometimes deer make so much noise going through the woods, and then there are other times when they are nearly silent...amazing really. So I raise my gun as he walks toward me. He gets to a spot just to my right of my shooting lane and stops dead. There is a small gap in the trees where his chest is exposed, as he was quartering toward me. He's only about 35 yards away now. I'm sure he see's me at this point. But after getting busted by an 8-pointer the day before, I'm not taking any chances. I carefully re-aimed through the gap between the trees, squeezed the trigger and....click.....no boom!!!!! What? ? I hadn't closed the action completely on my Beretta autoloader when trying to quietly load up earlier that morning. So now I'm standing there cycling the action to recock and making sure its all the way home this time. He HAS to know I'm there now with all of the clicking, swearing and mayhem coming from my general direction. Amazingly....he is still standing there!!! I re-aimed for the slot and boom! He ran about 50 yards through the woods and went down. I waited about 10 minutes, but I could see him and was sure he had expired. One entrance wound, no exit wound with a one ounce Remington Slugger. The slug caught both lungs and heart and literally liquified them. It was a quick, humane kill....which is very important to me. Needless the say, my friend Stuart is not too happy. Apparently, his shot that shattered the silence was on the same deer and he simply missed. Which is very unusual for him...he is a good shot. I feel fortunate to have bagged him. The stars aligned with Stuart missing, the buck's patience with my mayhem, and a well executed shot. Here is the pic: Deer Pic.

Headed back out to Lawrence county. Figured we'd try to get in a little earlier with this mid day feeding thing going on. Nothing on the lake property this morning. We've added a troop to the force today though. So hopefully we can get him one. Goodluck to everyone who's heading out this evening.

One man's miss is another man's hit.
Also an old saying regarding racking in a shell ............don't ride the slide.
