If one doesn't have a dog, when does one retrieve the shot ducks? Is it okay to leave them in the water for a while, or do you launch your boat and get them each time?

You will get n a grove of knowing how long it will take each time and how far away each bird is! Or maybe how windy it might be. Current might force ya to go after each bird instantly. Each time will require a different set of circumstances!! Does that make any sorta since? But,, once you get a fat stinkin river smellin stank dog,, you will never leave home without one!!!!! I love her!!!

I love her!!! This is really good pigeonflier. I'd love to have a dog like you mentioned. I have an American Bulldog 120lbs; he likes fetching, but he can't swim. He sinks like a rock, not enough fat on him. Me on the other hand... Thanks!

I guess I have a really stupid question. Will a shot duck sink after a while? :-) I'd sure hate to lose one.

Not that I know of but it will float away, get eaten by turtles lost in brush, come back to life etc... Tend to get them asap for those reasons but if sure its dead and i have a good mark will leave if more birds are working

I have a friend who uses a rod and reel and throws a spoon to snag the birds , not sure if that's LEGAL or not but this site does have a conservation officer who can tell you and me if this method is LEGAL or not

The DNR does list many different ways that are illegal to catch them, but in this case they are dead or well on their way.

Every cast won't snag the duck and you might get a big old bass hitting the lure on the retrieve...

You don't want to use a spoon. Use a floating lure such as a spook or rapala and one with several large hooks. Duscks won't sink. but you have to make sure they are dead dead. If not, they will motor off. Also if theres a wind blowing, they will move with the wind. Pretty hard to finish off cripples some times, especially if they won't raise their heads. You might carry a few 6's (steel) for cripples.

As I understand it is legal, but not considered sporting. As I was told, "it happens."

Shooting cripples is as sporting as it gets. And ethical and part of your responsibilities to retrieve wounded game.
As for shooting sitting ducks (or other flying game)its ok too. You dont make a deer run before you shoot it either.

My post was in reference to a sitting duck. I should have clarified.

I'm all about a quick kill, but I'll have to give him a sporting chance to survive past me ...which will probably just be to the other side of the pond. :-) I really appreciate all you guys teaching me. I'm green.
