We usually hunt the river so getting after them right away is a must unless they get hung up in a fallen tree top or something. Just don't go wading out after them, there might just be a log down below you can't see. I've heard about guys tripping and filling their waders, makes for a long, COLD rest of the hunt...

Thank you B, I had been wondering about the river. Do you have any idea how far south of Indy I would have to go to legally hunt White River?

Not sure, East Fork of the White River actually forms in Bartholomew County. I'm not familiar with the West Fork though. Best thing to do (and some may cuss me for this), take a drive around when season comes in and hit all the public access sites to see which has the most boat trailers parked there in the mornings. Then all you have to do is figure it if they're going upstream or downstream; regardless Google Earth is an invaluable tool.

Thanks B,
I'll call the DNR and ask them. I called the Hoosier National Forest and they told me a good place to go on Monroe.

Pretty much all of Marion Co is off limits. There were some small areas but I would avoid at all costs. Other than hunting inside of city limits if you get legal access to a river you typically can hunt it. Some towns/cities will allow hunting inside of city limits while others have ordnance against shooting regardless of the reason. It is in your best interest to know those rules before you try your luck. Let me tell you from experience, even in towns where you can hunt you will be dealing with local law enforcement and they may not be familiar as to why you are dressed in camo and toting a shot gun. I do not like weapons drawn on me!!!!

I think it's best to go get dead ducks ASAP. ASAP being if there are no other ducks working you after you shoot, then go get get it. IMO a dead duck in your spread with a white belly up doesn't make a very good decoy. If I were walking into a place to eat with a bunch of dead humans laying around, I think I'd find a different restaurant.
I shoot crippled ducks on the water all the time.
If I can, I let decoying birds finish and land on the water. Then when I stand to shoot, I try to get them to fly up. Is what it is, either way it usually ends up with meat on the table.

Thanks B, I'll call the DNR and ask them. I called the Hoosier National Forest and they told me a good place to go on Monroe. That spot on Monroe sucks, I wouldn't bother wasting your time. Hit me up closer to season, and you can tag along with me sometime if you want. I'll show ya a couple places to go for a new to the area hunter. I live just west of Indy in Avon, so it's really no prob. I too hunt the White River pretty often, but the Wabash is a little better.

I'd love to! I'm not use to all this kindness. I appreciate it, and will stay out of your way as much as possible. I do have 18 full-bodied decoys and a water mover, some blind material and a good duck gun. I like to share what I have, so if you need any of if anytime, you're more than welcome to it. Thanks again!

We'll work it out come closer to season. I would've never got into duck hunting if someone wouldn't have let me tag along way back when, so I like to pay it back when I can. We'll chat closer to season.
