I took these pics of a Woodie while down in Florida... This was the biggest wood duck I'd ever seen...easily the size of a big mallard. The colors are just incredible!

Awesome pictures. Just once I'd love to shoot one WWWWAAAAYYYY late in the season with that kind of plumage.
I've got one mounted at home, but they never seem to stick around here long enough to get the right plumage for an incredible mount.

A Bull Can putting the brakes on about 15 feet above my spread is the most beautiful duck I've seen.
(no offense Travis)

None taken Chico! ANY duck hitting the reverse-thrusters at 15' is a beautiful thing!

Travis, those birds are Harlequins. A sea duck from the west coast and Alaska. Nice but still can't touch a prime, prime woodie. In the years I have been doing taxidermy, I have only seen 2 or 3 woodies that were even close to prime. But Redheads now are a different story.

Thanks HT for the bird ID. God certainly took his time when he was creating waterfowl. (but what was he thinking when he made a coot???)

Dec , I've got the hotspot for some awesome woodie hunts, but they happen early in the season. You wont believe the #'s of birds. This one had the longest hood I saw in a while.

I'd say if you haven't yet harvested a bluebill you'd better focus on them, while we can still hunt them.....
I remember like it was yesterday when we couldn't take canvasbacks. It was a HUGE deal to see one. That first can after they opened the season......whew, I cried. Not kidding.

Redheads rule. Cans are nice too, but just a little to big to appear "fast" when mounted. The body proportions on Redheads are almost perfect. I come from an aeronautical background so I guess I lean that way a little. Here's a few we did for one of our customers. He brought me 32 ducks that year and 19 of them were Redheads. Talk about becoming one of my favorite people real quick.
