The proposals before the legislators are supposedly a result of an overabundance of the deer population. Where are these vast concentrations of deer? Certainly they are NOT in my haunts of Owen, Greene counties. Very few deer when compared to the past. I am willing to drive 3 hours one way to see these populations of teeming whitetails. I would just love to see the hordes of them. Too many deer? According to WHO?

I think, due to the make-up of our state, we have pockets with tons of deer, and pockets of few deer.

I think we are still a couple of years away from pre 2007 numbers in Gibson County. Cant complain about the number of deer I see ..... but it is less than it was prior to 2007.

I think, due to the make-up of our state, we have pockets with tons of deer, and pockets of few deer. You're correct! There are a few counties where the Deer Herd Population is still high, mostly in the extreme SW & SE Indiana. However these areas are also being developed with new roads, housing, Wal-Marts, schools, and such which takes away Deer & other wildlife Habitat.

Record or near record harvest each and every year say the deer population is doing pretty good. There were some counties that were hit pretty hard by EHD ... mostly southern counties .... but other than that the information available says deer numbers are doing just fine.

I hunt greene and it loaded with deer. I see at least a dozen a day around my house to and from work. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) There have been record harvests each of the past several years also... The proposals before the legislators are supposedly a result of an overabundance of the deer population. Where are these vast concentrations of deer? Harrison county has a huge deer population. The second Saturday of gun season this year my dad killed 8 deer in one morning. I hunted within 100 yards of his stand the last day of muzzleloader season and saw 10-12 all together in a field.

Indiana is no where close to its biological carrying capacity of deer, it is the social carrying capacity that has been exceeded. I see a fair amount of deer in the areas that I hunt, but as a hunter, I would prefer to see twice as many, but you've got to remember that most Indiana residents are not hunters. These folks often view deer as something that might tear up their car, or worse, cause injury or death from vehicle collision. Farmers would also like to see less deer, we all know that many farmers view deer as pests, and rightfully so. It's simply a case of hunters being outnumbered. If the deer density in your neck of the woods is low, don't shoot does. There are areas of the state that deer numbers are very high, and that is what the IDNR is trying to correct.

Most of the reported high Deer sightings are due to Deer being forced to live in a smaller habitat areas. These areas are like "shooting Fish in a barrel. When I lived north of Evansville, there was all kinds of woods and fields filled with food crops and I saw few Deer. Then Development came in and as the habitat shrunk & the corn/soybean fields became subdivisions I saw more Deer, on my property of 15 acres, as my property remained wild. Thus they stayed on my property, but I don't think there was an "Huge" increase in the Deer population.

I know a farmer pretty close to me that has taken 100 deer per summer off his couple hundred acres he farms. This info came from someone employed by the DNR.

I am not too "keen" allowing Farmers shooting Deer out of season. The reason there were so many Deer on this Farmer's land is most likely that was their only habitat/food source.

That is where hunting turned to WORK..Congratulations to your dad. I'm sure that morning is permanently lodged in the memory bank and will be talked about for a long, long time.
